Your Chinese zodiac sign is set by your birth year — but the year starts at Lunar New Year, between Jan 21 and Feb 20. Pick your year below for the exact boundary date, your element and yin-yang, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese names, compatibility and what the 2027 Fire Goat year means for you. Everything here is cultural tradition for entertainment.
Each year combines a heavenly stem (which sets the element and yin-yang) with an earthly branch (the animal). Ten stems and twelve branches line up every 60 years, so 1990 and 2050 are both Metal Horses. The last digit of a year tells you the element: 0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water, 4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth.
Find your birth year in the table. If you were born in January or February, compare your birthday with that year’s Lunar New Year date: before it, you belong to the previous animal.
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
From Feb 17, 2026 to Feb 5, 2027 it is the Year of the Fire Horse (丙午). The Fire Goat (丁未) begins on Feb 6, 2027.
They use the same 12 animals and 60-year cycle. Korean ddi follows the Korean lunar calendar (Seollal), which can be one day later than China’s; Korean Saju uses Ipchun (around Feb 4) for the year pillar.
From the last digit of the year: 0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water, 4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth; even years are yang and odd years yin.
