Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1953 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
If you were born between Feb 14, 1953 and Feb 2, 1954, your Chinese zodiac sign is the Snake — more precisely the Yin Water Snake (癸巳). Births earlier in 1953, from January 1 to Feb 13, 1953, still belong to the previous sign, the Yang Water Dragon (1952).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1953 that date was February 14, 1953.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Snake year) | Feb 14, 1953 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Snake year | Feb 2, 1954 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 14, 1953 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 14, 1953 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1953, 11:45 Korea time (Feb 4 10:45 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1953 |
In 1953 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 14), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 13 have a 癸巳 (Water Snake) year pillar in Saju but are still Dragons in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1953 is stem 癸 (Gye / Guǐ, Yin Water) on branch 巳 (Sa, the Snake), number 30 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Water Snake” rather than just “Snake”.
| Heavenly stem | 癸 Gye · Water 水 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 巳 Sa · Snake |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Snake | Fire (火) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Long River Water 長流水 (Korean 장류수) |
| Same pair repeats | 1893, 1953, 2013 |
Reading the element. Water is the element of winter, depth and flow. Water years are associated with intelligence, intuition, diplomacy and the ability to adapt to any container. Tradition warns of over-flexibility: Water can drift, keep options open too long or hide its real feelings. For a Water year the keywords are wisdom, adaptability and communication. The Snake itself carries Fire as its fixed element, so this year blends water energy with fire qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1952 and 1953 are Long River Water (長流水), pictured as a long river flowing to the sea: perseverance, broad vision and progress that comes from not stopping.
The same 癸巳 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Gye-Sa day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1953 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 癸巳 Guǐ Sì · Water Snake year | Feb 14, 1953 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Quý Tỵ · Tỵ (Rắn, snake) | Tết Feb 14 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1953 is called the year of the 검은 뱀띠 (black snake). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1953 counts as mi (巳, Snake) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: wise, intuitive, calm, private + wisdom, adaptability and communication
Snake years are traditionally read as thoughtful, perceptive and self-controlled. Snakes are said to plan quietly, read people well and move decisively once the moment is right.
Snakes were linked with wisdom, healing and the guarding of treasure. In Korean homes a house snake (eopgureongi) was once believed to protect the family’s wealth, so the sign is not as sinister as Western imagery suggests.
Where the Water element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Water Snake is perceptive, diplomatic, adaptable. Compared with the Metal Snake of 1941 and the Wood Snake of 1965, the 1953 version is read as the most adaptable and diplomatic Snake.
In love: Intense and devoted, but private; Snakes value loyalty very highly and can be possessive if trust is shaken. At work: Suited to research, analysis, finance, psychology, law, medicine, investigation and strategy roles.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Snake born in 1953, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey | Best match | 1944, 1956 | Six Harmony makes them natural allies, though the Snake–Monkey pair also counts as a punishment pair, so trust has to be earned. |
| Rooster | Great match | 1945, 1957 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Ox | Great match | 1949, 1961 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Snake | Same sign | 1941, 1965 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Tiger | Challenging | 1950, 1962 | Both a Harm and a Punishment pair: misunderstandings build up unless both stay very direct. |
| Pig | Most challenging | 1947, 1959 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Monkey | Tension | 1944, 1956 | Six Harmony makes them natural allies, though the Snake–Monkey pair also counts as a punishment pair, so trust has to be earned. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Snake that partner is the Dog. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Snake guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 8, 9 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | black, red, yellow |
| Five-element colour of 1953 | black (dark blue) — from the Water stem 癸 |
| Element that supports Water | Metal (generates Water) → colour white |
| Direction of the Snake | South-southeast |
| Snake hour | 09:00–11:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 검은 뱀띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a supportive year for the Water Snake:
| Animal vs. Goat | Seasonal (directional) Fire group with the Goat · Neutral |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Water controls Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 74 |
| Next Snake year | 2037 |
Snake, Horse and Goat together make the summer directional group (巳午未), so the Snake meets a familiar, warm Fire-Earth energy in 2027. Tradition sees this as a year to push visible projects, while minding over-heating schedules.
Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 74 | 75 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (癸巳) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1953 it falls in 2013 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2023 and palsun (80th) in 2033.
The Snake returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Water Snake element comes back only every 60 years.

1953 is the Year of the Yin Water Snake (癸巳, Guǐ Sì). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 14, 1953 and ended on Feb 2, 1954, so people born in that window are Snakes. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 14, 1953. Births from January 1 to Feb 13, 1953 belong to the Yang Water Dragon of 1952. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1953 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Monkey is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Rooster and Ox (Three Harmony). The Pig is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Tiger forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1953 turns 73 during 2026 and 74 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Seasonal (directional) Fire group with the Goat. Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1953 is 계사-nyeon (계사년, Gye-Sa), the year of the 뱀, so people born then are 검은 뱀띠 — literally a black snake, from the Water colour of the Water stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
