Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1959 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
If you were born between Feb 8, 1959 and Jan 27, 1960, your Chinese zodiac sign is the Pig — more precisely the Yin Earth Pig (己亥). Births earlier in 1959, from January 1 to Feb 7, 1959, still belong to the previous sign, the Yang Earth Dog (1958).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1959 that date was February 8, 1959.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Pig year) | Feb 8, 1959 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Pig year | Jan 27, 1960 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 8, 1959 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 8, 1959 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1959, 22:12 Korea time (Feb 4 21:42 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1959 |
In 1959 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 8), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 7 have a 己亥 (Earth Pig) year pillar in Saju but are still Dogs in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1959 is stem 己 (Gi / Jǐ, Yin Earth) on branch 亥 (Hae, the Pig), number 36 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Pig” rather than just “Pig”.
| Heavenly stem | 己 Gi · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 亥 Hae · Pig |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Pig | Water (水) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Flatland Wood 平地木 (Korean 평지목) |
| Same pair repeats | 1899, 1959, 2019 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Pig itself carries Water as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy with water qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1958 and 1959 are Flatland Wood (平地木), pictured as trees growing on open flatland: approachability, practical growth and a dislike of pretence.
The same 己亥 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Gi-Hae day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1959 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 己亥 Jǐ Hài · Earth Pig year | Feb 8, 1959 |
| Korean 띠 (ddi) | 기해년 (Gi-Hae) · 황금 돼지띠 | Seollal Feb 8; Saju: Ipchun Feb 4 |
| Japanese 干支 (eto) | tsuchinoto-i · 己亥 | Jan 1, 1959 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Kỷ Hợi · Hợi (Lợn/Heo, pig) | Tết Feb 8 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1959 is called the year of the 황금 돼지띠 (yellow (gold) pig). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1959 counts as i (亥, Pig) regardless of the lunar date. In Japan the twelfth animal is the wild boar (inoshishi), not the domestic pig.
Keywords: generous, warm-hearted, sincere, easygoing + stability, practicality and trust
Folk readings make the Pig the zodiac’s good-hearted host: trusting, cheerful and tolerant, happiest when everyone at the table is well fed.
The Pig closes the cycle and symbolises wealth and abundance; in Korea dreaming of a pig is a classic sign of luck. In Japan the twelfth sign is the wild boar (inoshishi) rather than the domestic pig.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Pig is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Pig of 1947 and the Metal Pig of 1971, the 1959 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Pig.
In love: Affectionate and devoted, putting effort into a comfortable home; Pigs want a sincere partner and dislike game-playing. At work: Suited to hospitality, food, healthcare, charity, education, the arts and roles built on trust.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Pig born in 1959, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiger | Best match | 1950, 1962 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Rabbit | Great match | 1951, 1963 | Both belong to the Wood trine (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Goat | Great match | 1955, 1967 | Both belong to the Wood trine (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Pig | Same sign | 1947, 1971 | Same sign with a self-punishment flag: you understand each other but may amplify the same weaknesses. |
| Monkey | Challenging | 1956, 1968 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Snake | Most challenging | 1953, 1965 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Pig that partner is the Dragon. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Pig guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 5, 8 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | yellow, grey |
| Five-element colour of 1959 | yellow — from the Earth stem 己 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Pig | North-northwest |
| Pig hour | 21:00–23:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 돼지띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a supportive year for the Earth Pig:
| Animal vs. Goat | Three Harmony (Wood trine) with the Goat · Very good |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 68 |
| Next Pig year | 2031 |
Your sign shares the Wood trine (Pig–Rabbit–Goat) with 2027, a traditionally co-operative pairing that favours growth, learning and new networks. In Korean folk practice, though, Pig, Rabbit and Goat are in their final samjae (삼재) year, nal-samjae, so the advice is to finish things cleanly rather than overreach.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 68 | 69 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (己亥) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1959 it falls in 2019 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2029 and palsun (80th) in 2039.
The Pig returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Pig element comes back only every 60 years.

1959 is the Year of the Yin Earth Pig (己亥, Jǐ Hài). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 8, 1959 and ended on Jan 27, 1960, so people born in that window are Pigs. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 8, 1959. Births from January 1 to Feb 7, 1959 belong to the Yang Earth Dog of 1958. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1959 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Tiger is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Rabbit and Goat (Three Harmony). The Snake is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Monkey forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1959 turns 67 during 2026 and 68 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Three Harmony (Wood trine) with the Goat. Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1959 is 기해-nyeon (기해년, Gi-Hae), the year of the 돼지, so people born then are 황금 돼지띠 — literally a yellow (gold) pig, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
