Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1968 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
If you were born between Jan 30, 1968 and Feb 16, 1969, your Chinese zodiac sign is the Monkey — more precisely the Yang Earth Monkey (戊申). Births earlier in 1968, from January 1 to Jan 29, 1968, still belong to the previous sign, the Yin Fire Goat (1967).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1968 that date was January 30, 1968.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Monkey year) | Jan 30, 1968 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Monkey year | Feb 16, 1969 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Jan 30, 1968 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Jan 29 (North Vietnam) / Jan 30 (South Vietnam) differs |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 5, 1968, 03:07 Korea time (Feb 5 2:07 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1968 |
Because Lunar New Year (Jan 30) came before Ipchun (Feb 5) in 1968, babies born from Jan 30 to Feb 4 are Monkeys by the popular zodiac but still have a 丁未 (Fire Goat) year pillar in a Korean Saju or Chinese Bazi chart.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1968 is stem 戊 (Mu / Wù, Yang Earth) on branch 申 (Sin, the Monkey), number 45 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Monkey” rather than just “Monkey”.
| Heavenly stem | 戊 Mu · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 申 Sin · Monkey |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Monkey | Metal (金) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Highway Earth 大驛土 (Korean 대역토) |
| Same pair repeats | 1908, 1968, 2028 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Monkey itself carries Metal as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy with metal qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1968 and 1969 are Highway Earth (大驛土), pictured as the earth of a great post road: connections, travel and the ability to link people and places.
The same 戊申 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Mu-Sin day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1968 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 戊申 Wù Shēn · Earth Monkey year | Jan 30, 1968 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Mậu Thân · Thân (Khỉ, monkey) | Tết Jan 29/30 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1968 is called the year of the 황금 원숭이띠 (yellow (gold) monkey). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1968 counts as saru (申, Monkey) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: clever, curious, playful, inventive + stability, practicality and trust
Monkey years are associated with wit, curiosity and versatility. Monkeys are said to learn fast, solve problems creatively and keep any group entertained.
The Monkey King, Sun Wukong of Journey to the West, gave the sign its reputation for brilliance, mischief and endless tricks. Japan’s three wise monkeys (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil) are another monkey motif.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Monkey is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Monkey of 1956 and the Metal Monkey of 1980, the 1968 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Monkey.
In love: Fun and lively, needing mental stimulation; Monkeys look for a partner who can keep up with their humour and ideas. At work: Strong in technology, engineering, trading, marketing, entertainment, journalism and problem-solving roles.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Monkey born in 1968, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snake | Best match | 1965, 1977 | Six Harmony makes them natural allies, though the Snake–Monkey pair also counts as a punishment pair, so trust has to be earned. |
| Rat | Great match | 1960, 1972 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dragon | Great match | 1964, 1976 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Monkey | Same sign | 1956, 1980 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Pig | Challenging | 1959, 1971 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Tiger | Most challenging | 1962, 1974 | Opposite signs that also form a punishment pair: strong attraction, frequent power struggles. |
| Snake | Tension | 1965, 1977 | Six Harmony makes them natural allies, though the Snake–Monkey pair also counts as a punishment pair, so trust has to be earned. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Monkey that partner is the Rabbit. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Monkey guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 4, 9 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | white, blue |
| Five-element colour of 1968 | yellow — from the Earth stem 戊 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Monkey | West-southwest |
| Monkey hour | 15:00–17:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 원숭이띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a neutral year for the Earth Monkey:
| Animal vs. Goat | No special relationship with the Goat · Neutral |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 59 |
| Next Monkey year | 2028 |
Your sign has no classical harmony or clash with the Goat, so 2027 is read as a "neutral" year in which results depend on your own effort and on the rest of your chart rather than on the year sign.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 59 | 60 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (戊申) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1968 it falls in 2028. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2038 and palsun (80th) in 2048.
The Monkey returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Monkey element comes back only every 60 years.
| Year | Sign | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 | Metal Monkey 庚申 | Feb 20, 1920 – Feb 7, 1921 |

| 1944 | Wood Monkey 甲申 | Jan 25, 1944 – Feb 12, 1945 |

| 1968 | Earth Monkey 戊申 | Jan 30, 1968 – Feb 16, 1969 |
| 1980 | Metal Monkey 庚申 | Feb 16, 1980 – Feb 4, 1981 |

| 2028 | Earth Monkey 戊申 | Jan 26, 2028 – Feb 12, 2029 |
1968 is the Year of the Yang Earth Monkey (戊申, Wù Shēn). The year began at Lunar New Year on Jan 30, 1968 and ended on Feb 16, 1969, so people born in that window are Monkeys. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Jan 30, 1968. Births from January 1 to Jan 29, 1968 belong to the Yin Fire Goat of 1967. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 5, 1968 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Snake is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Rat and Dragon (Three Harmony). The Tiger is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Pig forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1968 turns 58 during 2026 and 59 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
No special relationship with the Goat. Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1968 is 무신-nyeon (무신년, Mu-Sin), the year of the 원숭이, so people born then are 황금 원숭이띠 — literally a yellow (gold) monkey, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
