Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1972 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1972 is the Year of the Water Rat (壬子, Rén Zǐ), but only from Lunar New Year on Feb 15, 1972. A baby born on or after that date and up to Feb 2, 1973 is a Rat; anyone born from January 1 to Feb 14, 1972 is a Yin Metal Pig (1971).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1972 that date was February 15, 1972.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Rat year) | Feb 15, 1972 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Rat year | Feb 2, 1973 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 15, 1972 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 15, 1972 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 5, 1972, 02:20 Korea time (Feb 5 1:20 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1972 |
In 1972 Ipchun (Feb 5) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 15), so babies born from Feb 5 to Feb 14 have a 壬子 (Water Rat) year pillar in Saju but are still Pigs in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1972 is stem 壬 (Im / Rén, Yang Water) on branch 子 (Ja, the Rat), number 49 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Water Rat” rather than just “Rat”.
| Heavenly stem | 壬 Im · Water 水 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 子 Ja · Rat |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Rat | Water (水) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Mulberry Wood 桑柘木 (Korean 상자목) |
| Same pair repeats | 1912, 1972, 2032 |
Reading the element. Water is the element of winter, depth and flow. Water years are associated with intelligence, intuition, diplomacy and the ability to adapt to any container. Tradition warns of over-flexibility: Water can drift, keep options open too long or hide its real feelings. For a Water year the keywords are wisdom, adaptability and communication. The Rat itself carries Water as its fixed element, so this year blends water energy twice over — a “pure” Water year with its branch.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1972 and 1973 are Mulberry Wood (桑柘木), pictured as the mulberry tree that feeds silkworms: usefulness, hard work and patient contribution that becomes something fine.
The same 壬子 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Im-Ja day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1972 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 壬子 Rén Zǐ · Water Rat year | Feb 15, 1972 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Nhâm Tý · Tý (Chuột, rat) | Tết Feb 15 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1972 is called the year of the 검은 쥐띠 (black rat). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1972 counts as ne (子, Rat) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: quick-witted, resourceful, thrifty, sociable + wisdom, adaptability and communication
Rat years are traditionally read as alert, curious and quick to spot an opportunity. Rats are said to be good with money and planning, comfortable in social settings and able to land on their feet when circumstances change.
In the folk tale of the Great Race, the Rat rode on the Ox’s back and jumped ahead at the finish line, which is why it opens the twelve-year cycle. The story is a neat summary of how tradition sees the sign: clever, opportunistic and good at using whatever resources are at hand.
Where the Water element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Water Rat is perceptive, diplomatic, adaptable. Compared with the Metal Rat of 1960 and the Wood Rat of 1984, the 1972 version is read as the most adaptable and diplomatic Rat.
In love: Affectionate and attentive once committed, but cautious at the start; Rats like a partner who is clever and who shares their interest in building security together. At work: Strong in roles that reward speed and resourcefulness: business, sales, research, finance, writing and anything that involves spotting patterns early.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Rat born in 1972, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ox | Best match | 1961, 1973 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Monkey | Great match | 1968, 1980 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dragon | Great match | 1964, 1976 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rat | Same sign | 1960, 1984 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Goat | Challenging | 1967, 1979 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Horse | Most challenging | 1966, 1978 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Rabbit | Tension | 1963, 1975 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Rat that partner is the Goat. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Rat guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 3 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | blue, gold, green |
| Five-element colour of 1972 | black (dark blue) — from the Water stem 壬 |
| Element that supports Water | Metal (generates Water) → colour white |
| Direction of the Rat | North |
| Rat hour | 23:00–01:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 검은 쥐띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Water Rat:
| Animal vs. Goat | Harm with Tai Sui (害太岁) · Challenging |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Water controls Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 55 |
| Next Rat year | 2032 |
Rat and Goat form a Harm pair (and a Korean wonjin pair), so folk readings warn of misunderstandings, gossip or small setbacks in 2027. Over-communicate, double-check messages and avoid taking sides in other people’s quarrels.
Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 55 | 56 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (壬子) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1972 it falls in 2032. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2042 and palsun (80th) in 2052.
The Rat returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Water Rat element comes back only every 60 years.

1972 is the Year of the Yang Water Rat (壬子, Rén Zǐ). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 15, 1972 and ended on Feb 2, 1973, so people born in that window are Rats. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 15, 1972. Births from January 1 to Feb 14, 1972 belong to the Yin Metal Pig of 1971. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 5, 1972 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Ox is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Monkey and Dragon (Three Harmony). The Horse is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Goat forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1972 turns 54 during 2026 and 55 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Harm with Tai Sui (害太岁). Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1972 is 임자-nyeon (임자년, Im-Ja), the year of the 쥐, so people born then are 검은 쥐띠 — literally a black rat, from the Water colour of the Water stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
