Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1973 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
The Chinese zodiac sign for 1973 is the Water Ox (癸丑). The Ox year ran from Feb 3, 1973 to Jan 22, 1974, so a January or early-February 1973 birthday before Feb 3, 1973 counts as the Yang Water Rat (1972) instead.
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1973 that date was February 3, 1973.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Ox year) | Feb 3, 1973 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Ox year | Jan 22, 1974 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 3, 1973 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 3, 1973 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1973, 08:04 Korea time (Feb 4 7:04 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1973 |
Because Lunar New Year (Feb 3) came before Ipchun (Feb 4) in 1973, babies born from Feb 3 to Feb 3 are Oxs by the popular zodiac but still have a 壬子 (Water Rat) year pillar in a Korean Saju or Chinese Bazi chart.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1973 is stem 癸 (Gye / Guǐ, Yin Water) on branch 丑 (Chuk, the Ox), number 50 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Water Ox” rather than just “Ox”.
| Heavenly stem | 癸 Gye · Water 水 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 丑 Chuk · Ox |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Ox | Earth (土) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Mulberry Wood 桑柘木 (Korean 상자목) |
| Same pair repeats | 1913, 1973, 2033 |
Reading the element. Water is the element of winter, depth and flow. Water years are associated with intelligence, intuition, diplomacy and the ability to adapt to any container. Tradition warns of over-flexibility: Water can drift, keep options open too long or hide its real feelings. For a Water year the keywords are wisdom, adaptability and communication. The Ox itself carries Earth as its fixed element, so this year blends water energy with earth qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1972 and 1973 are Mulberry Wood (桑柘木), pictured as the mulberry tree that feeds silkworms: usefulness, hard work and patient contribution that becomes something fine.
The same 癸丑 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Gye-Chuk day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1973 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 癸丑 Guǐ Chǒu · Water Ox year | Feb 3, 1973 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Quý Sửu · Sửu (Trâu, water buffalo) | Tết Feb 3 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1973 is called the year of the 검은 소띠 (black ox). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1973 counts as ushi (丑, Ox) regardless of the lunar date. In Vietnam the Ox is usually pictured as a water buffalo (trâu).
Keywords: patient, diligent, reliable, methodical + wisdom, adaptability and communication
Ox years are associated with endurance, honesty and a calm, methodical approach. Ox people are said to finish what they start, respect tradition and earn trust through actions rather than speeches.
The Ox finished the Great Race second because it was steady rather than fast, and it carried the Rat across the river. In agricultural East Asia the ox was the family’s most valuable worker, so the sign stands for honest labour and slow, certain progress.
Where the Water element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Water Ox is perceptive, diplomatic, adaptable. Compared with the Metal Ox of 1961 and the Wood Ox of 1985, the 1973 version is read as the most adaptable and diplomatic Ox.
In love: Loyal and protective, slow to open up but very committed; Oxen value stability, shared routines and a partner who is honest. At work: Suited to work that rewards persistence: engineering, agriculture, medicine, administration, crafts, real estate and long-term projects.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Ox born in 1973, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rat | Best match | 1972, 1984 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Snake | Great match | 1965, 1977 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rooster | Great match | 1969, 1981 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Ox | Same sign | 1961, 1985 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Horse | Challenging | 1966, 1978 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Goat | Most challenging | 1967, 1979 | Opposite signs that also form a punishment pair: strong attraction, frequent power struggles. |
| Dog | Tension | 1970, 1982 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Ox that partner is the Horse. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Ox guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 1, 9 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | white, yellow |
| Five-element colour of 1973 | black (dark blue) — from the Water stem 癸 |
| Element that supports Water | Metal (generates Water) → colour white |
| Direction of the Ox | North-northeast |
| Ox hour | 01:00–03:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 검은 소띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Water Ox:
| Animal vs. Goat | Clash with Tai Sui (冲太岁) + punishment · Most difficult |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Water controls Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 54 |
| Next Ox year | 2033 |
Ox and Goat sit directly opposite each other, so in Chinese folk belief the Ox "clashes with Tai Sui" in 2027, and the Ox–Goat–Dog punishment group adds tension. Tradition reads this as a year of movement—relocation, job change, reorganised plans—where caution with contracts, health routines and conflicts pays off.
Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested.

The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (癸丑) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1973 it falls in 2033. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2043 and palsun (80th) in 2053.
The Ox returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Water Ox element comes back only every 60 years.

1973 is the Year of the Yin Water Ox (癸丑, Guǐ Chǒu). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 3, 1973 and ended on Jan 22, 1974, so people born in that window are Oxs. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 3, 1973. Births from January 1 to Feb 2, 1973 belong to the Yang Water Rat of 1972. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1973 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Rat is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Snake and Rooster (Three Harmony). The Goat is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Horse forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1973 turns 53 during 2026 and 54 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Clash with Tai Sui (冲太岁) + punishment. Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1973 is 계축-nyeon (계축년, Gye-Chuk), the year of the 소, so people born then are 검은 소띠 — literally a black ox, from the Water colour of the Water stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
