Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1997 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
The Chinese zodiac sign for 1997 is the Fire Ox (丁丑). The Ox year ran from Feb 7, 1997 to Jan 27, 1998, so a January or early-February 1997 birthday before Feb 7, 1997 counts as the Yang Fire Rat (1996) instead.
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1997 that date was February 7, 1997.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Ox year) | Feb 7, 1997 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Ox year | Jan 27, 1998 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 8, 1997 differs from China |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 7, 1997 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1997, 04:01 Korea time (Feb 4 3:01 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1997 |
In 1997 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 7), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 6 have a 丁丑 (Fire Ox) year pillar in Saju but are still Rats in the popular zodiac.
Korea’s calendar is calculated for Korea time (UTC+9), one hour ahead of Beijing. In 1997 the new moon fell at 23:06 Beijing time, which was already the next day in Korea, so Seollal was Feb 8, 1997 while China celebrated on Feb 7, 1997.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1997 is stem 丁 (Jeong / Dīng, Yin Fire) on branch 丑 (Chuk, the Ox), number 14 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Fire Ox” rather than just “Ox”.
| Heavenly stem | 丁 Jeong · Fire 火 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 丑 Chuk · Ox |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Ox | Earth (土) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Valley Stream Water 澗下水 (Korean 간하수) |
| Same pair repeats | 1937, 1997, 2057 |
Reading the element. Fire is the element of summer and visibility. Fire years are associated with enthusiasm, charisma, quick decisions and a need to share feelings openly. Tradition warns that the same heat can flare into impatience or burn out when a project stops being exciting. For a Fire year the keywords are passion, warmth and expression. The Ox itself carries Earth as its fixed element, so this year blends fire energy with earth qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1996 and 1997 are Valley Stream Water (澗下水), pictured as clear water running in a ravine: purity, focus and a quiet, persistent way of wearing down obstacles.
The same 丁丑 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Jeong-Chuk day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1997 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 丁丑 Dīng Chǒu · Fire Ox year | Feb 7, 1997 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Đinh Sửu · Sửu (Trâu, water buffalo) | Tết Feb 7 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1997 is called the year of the 붉은 소띠 (red ox). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1997 counts as ushi (丑, Ox) regardless of the lunar date. In Vietnam the Ox is usually pictured as a water buffalo (trâu).
Keywords: patient, diligent, reliable, methodical + passion, warmth and expression
Ox years are associated with endurance, honesty and a calm, methodical approach. Ox people are said to finish what they start, respect tradition and earn trust through actions rather than speeches.
The Ox finished the Great Race second because it was steady rather than fast, and it carried the Rat across the river. In agricultural East Asia the ox was the family’s most valuable worker, so the sign stands for honest labour and slow, certain progress.
Where the Fire element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Fire Ox is enthusiastic, expressive, inspiring. Compared with the Wood Ox of 1985 and the Earth Ox of 2009, the 1997 version is read as the most expressive and fiery Ox.
In love: Loyal and protective, slow to open up but very committed; Oxen value stability, shared routines and a partner who is honest. At work: Suited to work that rewards persistence: engineering, agriculture, medicine, administration, crafts, real estate and long-term projects.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Ox born in 1997, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rat | Best match | 1996, 2008 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Snake | Great match | 1989, 2001 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rooster | Great match | 1993, 2005 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Ox | Same sign | 1985, 2009 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Horse | Challenging | 1990, 2002 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Goat | Most challenging | 1991, 2003 | Opposite signs that also form a punishment pair: strong attraction, frequent power struggles. |
| Dog | Tension | 1994, 2006 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Ox that partner is the Horse. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Ox guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 1, 9 |

| Lucky colours (popular list) | white, yellow |
| Five-element colour of 1997 | red — from the Fire stem 丁 |
| Element that supports Fire | Wood (generates Fire) → colour green |
| Direction of the Ox | North-northeast |
| Ox hour | 01:00–03:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 붉은 소띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Fire Ox:
| Animal vs. Goat | Clash with Tai Sui (冲太岁) + punishment · Most difficult |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire meets Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 30 |
| Next Ox year | 2033 |
Ox and Goat sit directly opposite each other, so in Chinese folk belief the Ox "clashes with Tai Sui" in 2027, and the Ox–Goat–Dog punishment group adds tension. Tradition reads this as a year of movement—relocation, job change, reorganised plans—where caution with contracts, health routines and conflicts pays off.
Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes.

The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (丁丑) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1997 it falls in 2057. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2067 and palsun (80th) in 2077.
The Ox returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Fire Ox element comes back only every 60 years.

1997 is the Year of the Yin Fire Ox (丁丑, Dīng Chǒu). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 7, 1997 and ended on Jan 27, 1998, so people born in that window are Oxs. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 7, 1997. Births from January 1 to Feb 6, 1997 belong to the Yang Fire Rat of 1996. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1997 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Rat is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Snake and Rooster (Three Harmony). The Goat is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Horse forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1997 turns 29 during 2026 and 30 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Clash with Tai Sui (冲太岁) + punishment. Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1997 is 정축-nyeon (정축년, Jeong-Chuk), the year of the 소, so people born then are 붉은 소띠 — literally a red ox, from the Fire colour of the Fire stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
