Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1999 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1999 is the Year of the Earth Rabbit (己卯, Jǐ Mǎo), but only from Lunar New Year on Feb 16, 1999. A baby born on or after that date and up to Feb 4, 2000 is a Rabbit; anyone born from January 1 to Feb 15, 1999 is a Yang Earth Tiger (1998).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1999 that date was February 16, 1999.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Rabbit year) | Feb 16, 1999 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Rabbit year | Feb 4, 2000 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 16, 1999 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 16, 1999 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1999, 15:57 Korea time (Feb 4 14:57 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1999 |
In 1999 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 16), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 15 have a 己卯 (Earth Rabbit) year pillar in Saju but are still Tigers in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1999 is stem 己 (Gi / Jǐ, Yin Earth) on branch 卯 (Myo, the Rabbit), number 16 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Rabbit” rather than just “Rabbit”.
| Heavenly stem | 己 Gi · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 卯 Myo · Rabbit |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Rabbit | Wood (木) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | City Wall Earth 城頭土 (Korean 성두토) |
| Same pair repeats | 1939, 1999, 2059 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Rabbit itself carries Wood as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy with wood qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1998 and 1999 are City Wall Earth (城頭土), pictured as the rammed earth of a city wall: protection, structure and a sense of duty toward a community.
The same 己卯 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Gi-Myo day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1999 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 己卯 Jǐ Mǎo · Earth Rabbit year | Feb 16, 1999 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Kỷ Mão · Mão (Mèo, cat — Vietnam uses the Cat) | Tết Feb 16 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1999 is called the year of the 황금 토끼띠 (yellow (gold) rabbit). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1999 counts as u (卯, Rabbit) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam swaps the Rabbit for the Cat, so this is a Cat year (năm Mão/Mèo) there.
Keywords: gentle, elegant, diplomatic, cautious + stability, practicality and trust
Rabbit years are traditionally read as kind, tactful and refined. Rabbits are said to dislike conflict, to have good taste and to notice the mood of a room long before others do.
The Rabbit is linked with the Moon in East Asian folklore, where a rabbit pounds rice cakes or elixir. Vietnam replaces the Rabbit with the Cat, so a 1987 or 1999 baby there is a Cat year child.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Rabbit is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Rabbit of 1987 and the Metal Rabbit of 2011, the 1999 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Rabbit.
In love: Romantic and considerate, preferring harmony and a peaceful home; Rabbits need reassurance and a partner who avoids drama. At work: Suited to design, the arts, counselling, diplomacy, education, hospitality, healthcare and anything that values tact and taste.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Rabbit born in 1999, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog | Best match | 1994, 2006 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Pig | Great match | 1995, 2007 | Both belong to the Wood trine (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Goat | Great match | 1991, 2003 | Both belong to the Wood trine (Pig, Rabbit, Goat), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rabbit | Same sign | 1987, 2011 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Dragon | Challenging | 1988, 2000 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Rooster | Most challenging | 1993, 2005 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Rat | Tension | 1996, 2008 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Rabbit that partner is the Monkey. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Rabbit guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 3, 4, 9 |

| Lucky colours (popular list) | red, pink, purple |
| Five-element colour of 1999 | yellow — from the Earth stem 己 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Rabbit | East |
| Rabbit hour | 05:00–07:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 토끼띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a supportive year for the Earth Rabbit:
| Animal vs. Goat | Three Harmony (Wood trine) with the Goat · Very good |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 28 |
| Next Rabbit year | 2035 |
Your sign shares the Wood trine (Pig–Rabbit–Goat) with 2027, a traditionally co-operative pairing that favours growth, learning and new networks. In Korean folk practice, though, Pig, Rabbit and Goat are in their final samjae (삼재) year, nal-samjae, so the advice is to finish things cleanly rather than overreach.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (己卯) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1999 it falls in 2059. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2069 and palsun (80th) in 2079.
The Rabbit returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Rabbit element comes back only every 60 years.

1999 is the Year of the Yin Earth Rabbit (己卯, Jǐ Mǎo). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 16, 1999 and ended on Feb 4, 2000, so people born in that window are Rabbits. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 16, 1999. Births from January 1 to Feb 15, 1999 belong to the Yang Earth Tiger of 1998. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1999 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Dog is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Pig and Goat (Three Harmony). The Rooster is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Dragon forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1999 turns 27 during 2026 and 28 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Three Harmony (Wood trine) with the Goat. Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1999 is 기묘-nyeon (기묘년, Gi-Myo), the year of the 토끼, so people born then are 황금 토끼띠 — literally a yellow (gold) rabbit, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
