Chinese zodiac by birth year · 2006 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
The Chinese zodiac sign for 2006 is the Fire Dog (丙戌). The Dog year ran from Jan 29, 2006 to Feb 17, 2007, so a January or early-February 2006 birthday before Jan 29, 2006 counts as the Yin Wood Rooster (2005) instead.
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 2006 that date was January 29, 2006.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Dog year) | Jan 29, 2006 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Dog year | Feb 17, 2007 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Jan 29, 2006 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Jan 29, 2006 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 2006, 08:27 Korea time (Feb 4 7:27 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2006 |
Because Lunar New Year (Jan 29) came before Ipchun (Feb 4) in 2006, babies born from Jan 29 to Feb 3 are Dogs by the popular zodiac but still have a 乙酉 (Wood Rooster) year pillar in a Korean Saju or Chinese Bazi chart.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 2006 is stem 丙 (Byeong / Bǐng, Yang Fire) on branch 戌 (Sul, the Dog), number 23 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Fire Dog” rather than just “Dog”.
| Heavenly stem | 丙 Byeong · Fire 火 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 戌 Sul · Dog |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Dog | Earth (土) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Rooftop Earth 屋上土 (Korean 옥상토) |
| Same pair repeats | 1946, 2006, 2066 |
Reading the element. Fire is the element of summer and visibility. Fire years are associated with enthusiasm, charisma, quick decisions and a need to share feelings openly. Tradition warns that the same heat can flare into impatience or burn out when a project stops being exciting. For a Fire year the keywords are passion, warmth and expression. The Dog itself carries Earth as its fixed element, so this year blends fire energy with earth qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 2006 and 2007 are Rooftop Earth (屋上土), pictured as the earth tiles of a roof: shelter, responsibility for a household and steady, unglamorous reliability.
The same 丙戌 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Byeong-Sul day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 2006 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 丙戌 Bǐng Xū · Fire Dog year | Jan 29, 2006 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Bính Tuất · Tuất (Chó, dog) | Tết Jan 29 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 2006 is called the year of the 붉은 개띠 (red dog). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 2006 counts as inu (戌, Dog) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: loyal, honest, protective, fair + passion, warmth and expression
Tradition paints the Dog as the guardian of the zodiac: honest, faithful and responsible, sometimes anxious about the people and causes it protects.
As guardian of the home, the dog stands for loyalty and justice. In Japan the Dog is linked with easy childbirth, so expectant mothers traditionally visit shrines on a Dog day of the calendar.
Where the Fire element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Fire Dog is enthusiastic, expressive, inspiring. Compared with the Wood Dog of 1994 and the Earth Dog of 2018, the 2006 version is read as the most expressive and fiery Dog.
In love: Devoted and sincere once trust is built; Dogs need honesty above all and a partner who shares their values. At work: At home in law, social work, healthcare, teaching, public service, security and non-profit work.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Dog born in 2006, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rabbit | Best match | 1999, 2011 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Tiger | Great match | 1998, 2010 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Horse | Great match | 2002, 2014 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dog | Same sign | 1994, 2018 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Rooster | Challenging | 2005, 2017 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Dragon | Most challenging | 2000, 2012 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Ox | Tension | 1997, 2009 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
| Goat | Tension | 2003, 2015 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Dog that partner is the Snake. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Dog guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 3, 4, 9 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | green, red |
| Five-element colour of 2006 | red — from the Fire stem 丙 |
| Element that supports Fire | Wood (generates Fire) → colour green |
| Direction of the Dog | West-northwest |
| Dog hour | 19:00–21:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 붉은 개띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Fire Dog:
| Animal vs. Goat | Punishment / break with Tai Sui (刑·破太岁) · Challenging |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire meets Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 21 |
| Next Dog year | 2030 |
Dog belongs to the Ox–Goat–Dog punishment group, and Dog–Goat is also a "break" (破) pair, so 2027 is listed among the years that "offend Tai Sui" for the Dog. Folk advice: keep paperwork in order, avoid risky guarantees and choose patience over confrontation.
Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes.

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 21 | 22 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (丙戌) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 2006 it falls in 2066. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2076 and palsun (80th) in 2086.
The Dog returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Fire Dog element comes back only every 60 years.

2006 is the Year of the Yang Fire Dog (丙戌, Bǐng Xū). The year began at Lunar New Year on Jan 29, 2006 and ended on Feb 17, 2007, so people born in that window are Dogs. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Jan 29, 2006. Births from January 1 to Jan 28, 2006 belong to the Yin Wood Rooster of 2005. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 2006 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Rabbit is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Tiger and Horse (Three Harmony). The Dragon is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Rooster forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 2006 turns 20 during 2026 and 21 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Punishment / break with Tai Sui (刑·破太岁). Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 2006 is 병술-nyeon (병술년, Byeong-Sul), the year of the 개, so people born then are 붉은 개띠 — literally a red dog, from the Fire colour of the Fire stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
