Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1958 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
The Chinese zodiac sign for 1958 is the Earth Dog (戊戌). The Dog year ran from Feb 18, 1958 to Feb 7, 1959, so a January or early-February 1958 birthday before Feb 18, 1958 counts as the Yin Fire Rooster (1957) instead.
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1958 that date was February 18, 1958.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Dog year) | Feb 18, 1958 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Dog year | Feb 7, 1959 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 19, 1958 differs from China |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 18, 1958 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1958, 16:19 Korea time (Feb 4 15:49 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1958 |
In 1958 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 18), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 17 have a 戊戌 (Earth Dog) year pillar in Saju but are still Roosters in the popular zodiac.
Korea’s calendar is calculated for Korea time (UTC+9), one hour ahead of Beijing. In 1958 the new moon fell at 23:38 Beijing time, which was already the next day in Korea, so Seollal was Feb 19, 1958 while China celebrated on Feb 18, 1958. Korean almanacs from the 1940s–50s may not always match modern computation; check a family record if a birthday sits on this exact day.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1958 is stem 戊 (Mu / Wù, Yang Earth) on branch 戌 (Sul, the Dog), number 35 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Dog” rather than just “Dog”.
| Heavenly stem | 戊 Mu · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 戌 Sul · Dog |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Dog | Earth (土) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Flatland Wood 平地木 (Korean 평지목) |
| Same pair repeats | 1898, 1958, 2018 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Dog itself carries Earth as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy twice over — a “pure” Earth year with its branch.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1958 and 1959 are Flatland Wood (平地木), pictured as trees growing on open flatland: approachability, practical growth and a dislike of pretence.
The same 戊戌 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Mu-Sul day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1958 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 戊戌 Wù Xū · Earth Dog year | Feb 18, 1958 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Mậu Tuất · Tuất (Chó, dog) | Tết Feb 18 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1958 is called the year of the 황금 개띠 (yellow (gold) dog). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1958 counts as inu (戌, Dog) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: loyal, honest, protective, fair + stability, practicality and trust
Tradition paints the Dog as the guardian of the zodiac: honest, faithful and responsible, sometimes anxious about the people and causes it protects.
As guardian of the home, the dog stands for loyalty and justice. In Japan the Dog is linked with easy childbirth, so expectant mothers traditionally visit shrines on a Dog day of the calendar.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Dog is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Dog of 1946 and the Metal Dog of 1970, the 1958 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Dog.
In love: Devoted and sincere once trust is built; Dogs need honesty above all and a partner who shares their values. At work: At home in law, social work, healthcare, teaching, public service, security and non-profit work.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Dog born in 1958, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rabbit | Best match | 1951, 1963 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Tiger | Great match | 1950, 1962 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Horse | Great match | 1954, 1966 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dog | Same sign | 1946, 1970 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Rooster | Challenging | 1957, 1969 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Dragon | Most challenging | 1952, 1964 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Ox | Tension | 1949, 1961 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
| Goat | Tension | 1955, 1967 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Dog that partner is the Snake. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Dog guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 3, 4, 9 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | green, red |
| Five-element colour of 1958 | yellow — from the Earth stem 戊 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Dog | West-northwest |
| Dog hour | 19:00–21:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 개띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Earth Dog:
| Animal vs. Goat | Punishment / break with Tai Sui (刑·破太岁) · Challenging |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 69 |
| Next Dog year | 2030 |
Dog belongs to the Ox–Goat–Dog punishment group, and Dog–Goat is also a "break" (破) pair, so 2027 is listed among the years that "offend Tai Sui" for the Dog. Folk advice: keep paperwork in order, avoid risky guarantees and choose patience over confrontation.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (戊戌) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1958 it falls in 2018 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2028 and palsun (80th) in 2038.
The Dog returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Dog element comes back only every 60 years.

1958 is the Year of the Yang Earth Dog (戊戌, Wù Xū). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 18, 1958 and ended on Feb 7, 1959, so people born in that window are Dogs. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 18, 1958. Births from January 1 to Feb 17, 1958 belong to the Yin Fire Rooster of 1957. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1958 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Rabbit is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Tiger and Horse (Three Harmony). The Dragon is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Rooster forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1958 turns 68 during 2026 and 69 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Punishment / break with Tai Sui (刑·破太岁). Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1958 is 무술-nyeon (무술년, Mu-Sul), the year of the 개, so people born then are 황금 개띠 — literally a yellow (gold) dog, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
