Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1957 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1957 is the Year of the Fire Rooster (丁酉, Dīng Yǒu), but only from Lunar New Year on Jan 31, 1957. A baby born on or after that date and up to Feb 17, 1958 is a Rooster; anyone born from January 1 to Jan 30, 1957 is a Yang Fire Monkey (1956).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1957 that date was January 31, 1957.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Rooster year) | Jan 31, 1957 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Rooster year | Feb 17, 1958 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Jan 31, 1957 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Jan 31, 1957 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1957, 10:24 Korea time (Feb 4 9:54 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1957 |
Because Lunar New Year (Jan 31) came before Ipchun (Feb 4) in 1957, babies born from Jan 31 to Feb 3 are Roosters by the popular zodiac but still have a 丙申 (Fire Monkey) year pillar in a Korean Saju or Chinese Bazi chart.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1957 is stem 丁 (Jeong / Dīng, Yin Fire) on branch 酉 (Yu, the Rooster), number 34 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Fire Rooster” rather than just “Rooster”.
| Heavenly stem | 丁 Jeong · Fire 火 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 酉 Yu · Rooster |
| Yin or yang | Yin (Yin years end in an odd digit) |
| Fixed element of the Rooster | Metal (金) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Fire below the Mountain 山下火 (Korean 산하화) |
| Same pair repeats | 1897, 1957, 2017 |
Reading the element. Fire is the element of summer and visibility. Fire years are associated with enthusiasm, charisma, quick decisions and a need to share feelings openly. Tradition warns that the same heat can flare into impatience or burn out when a project stops being exciting. For a Fire year the keywords are passion, warmth and expression. The Rooster itself carries Metal as its fixed element, so this year blends fire energy with metal qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1956 and 1957 are Fire below the Mountain (山下火), pictured as a fire burning at the foot of a mountain: warmth for those nearby and a light that is gentle rather than blazing.
The same 丁酉 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Jeong-Yu day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1957 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 丁酉 Dīng Yǒu · Fire Rooster year | Jan 31, 1957 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Đinh Dậu · Dậu (Gà, rooster) | Tết Jan 31 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1957 is called the year of the 붉은 닭띠 (red rooster). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1957 counts as tori (酉, Rooster) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: observant, hard-working, confident, punctual + passion, warmth and expression
In folk readings the Rooster is the zodiac’s organiser: punctual, well-presented and hard-working, proud of doing things properly.
The rooster that crows at dawn was believed to chase away night spirits. Tradition credits the bird with five virtues: civility (its comb), martial spirit (spurs), courage, benevolence (sharing food) and trustworthiness (keeping time).
Where the Fire element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Fire Rooster is enthusiastic, expressive, inspiring. Compared with the Wood Rooster of 1945 and the Earth Rooster of 1969, the 1957 version is read as the most expressive and fiery Rooster.
In love: Loyal and attentive, with clear expectations; Roosters appreciate a partner who is honest and who notices their effort. At work: Suited to accounting, auditing, journalism, the military, management, quality control and any detail-heavy profession.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Rooster born in 1957, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon | Best match | 1952, 1964 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Snake | Great match | 1953, 1965 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Ox | Great match | 1949, 1961 | Both belong to the Metal trine (Snake, Rooster, Ox), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rooster | Same sign | 1945, 1969 | Same sign with a self-punishment flag: you understand each other but may amplify the same weaknesses. |
| Dog | Challenging | 1946, 1958 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Rabbit | Most challenging | 1951, 1963 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Rooster that partner is the Tiger. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Rooster guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 5, 7, 8 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | gold, brown |
| Five-element colour of 1957 | red — from the Fire stem 丁 |
| Element that supports Fire | Wood (generates Fire) → colour green |
| Direction of the Rooster | West |
| Rooster hour | 17:00–19:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 붉은 닭띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a neutral year for the Fire Rooster:
| Animal vs. Goat | No special relationship with the Goat · Neutral |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire meets Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 70 |
| Next Rooster year | 2029 |
Your sign has no classical harmony or clash with the Goat, so 2027 is read as a "neutral" year in which results depend on your own effort and on the rest of your chart rather than on the year sign.
Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| International age after birthday | 69 | 70 |
| Before birthday | 68 | 69 |
| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 70 | 71 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (丁酉) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1957 it falls in 2017 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2027 and palsun (80th) in 2037.
The Rooster returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Fire Rooster element comes back only every 60 years.

1957 is the Year of the Yin Fire Rooster (丁酉, Dīng Yǒu). The year began at Lunar New Year on Jan 31, 1957 and ended on Feb 17, 1958, so people born in that window are Roosters. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Jan 31, 1957. Births from January 1 to Jan 30, 1957 belong to the Yang Fire Monkey of 1956. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1957 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Dragon is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Snake and Ox (Three Harmony). The Rabbit is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Dog forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1957 turns 69 during 2026 and 70 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
No special relationship with the Goat. Your birth-year element is the same as the year’s stem. Expect a confidence boost and more peers, competitors and social invitations; tradition warns against impulsive spending and ego clashes. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1957 is 정유-nyeon (정유년, Jeong-Yu), the year of the 닭, so people born then are 붉은 닭띠 — literally a red rooster, from the Fire colour of the Fire stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
