Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1978 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1978 is the Year of the Earth Horse (戊午, Wù Wǔ), but only from Lunar New Year on Feb 7, 1978. A baby born on or after that date and up to Jan 27, 1979 is a Horse; anyone born from January 1 to Feb 6, 1978 is a Yin Fire Snake (1977).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1978 that date was February 7, 1978.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Horse year) | Feb 7, 1978 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Horse year | Jan 27, 1979 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 7, 1978 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 7, 1978 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1978, 13:26 Korea time (Feb 4 12:26 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1978 |
In 1978 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 7), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 6 have a 戊午 (Earth Horse) year pillar in Saju but are still Snakes in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1978 is stem 戊 (Mu / Wù, Yang Earth) on branch 午 (O, the Horse), number 55 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Horse” rather than just “Horse”.
| Heavenly stem | 戊 Mu · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 午 O · Horse |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Horse | Fire (火) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Sky Fire 天上火 (Korean 천상화) |
| Same pair repeats | 1918, 1978, 2038 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Horse itself carries Fire as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy with fire qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1978 and 1979 are Sky Fire (天上火), pictured as fire in the sky, the sun itself: radiance, optimism and a public presence that warms many people at once.
The same 戊午 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Mu-O day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1978 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 戊午 Wù Wǔ · Earth Horse year | Feb 7, 1978 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Mậu Ngọ · Ngọ (Ngựa, horse) | Tết Feb 7 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1978 is called the year of the 황금 말띠 (yellow (gold) horse). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1978 counts as uma (午, Horse) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: free-spirited, energetic, sociable, direct + stability, practicality and trust
Horse years are associated with energy, independence and enthusiasm. Horses are said to love movement and new experiences, speak their minds and win friends easily.
The horse stands at due south and at midday, the peak of yang energy. Fire Horse years carry special folklore in Japan (hinoeuma): births in Japan fell by about a quarter in 1966 because of the superstition, according to national vital statistics.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Horse is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Horse of 1966 and the Metal Horse of 1990, the 1978 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Horse.
In love: Romantic and spontaneous, falling in love quickly; Horses need freedom and a partner who enjoys adventure. At work: At home in travel, sales, sport, media, performance, field work and fast-moving startups.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Horse born in 1978, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goat | Best match | 1967, 1979 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Tiger | Great match | 1974, 1986 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dog | Great match | 1970, 1982 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Horse | Same sign | 1966, 1990 | Same sign with a self-punishment flag: you understand each other but may amplify the same weaknesses. |
| Ox | Challenging | 1973, 1985 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Rat | Most challenging | 1972, 1984 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Horse that partner is the Ox. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Horse guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 3, 7 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | yellow, green |
| Five-element colour of 1978 | yellow — from the Earth stem 戊 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Horse | South |
| Horse hour | 11:00–13:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 말띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a supportive year for the Earth Horse:
| Animal vs. Goat | Six Harmony with the Goat · Excellent |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 49 |
| Next Horse year | 2038 |
The Horse and Goat form a Six Harmony pair, so tradition counts 2027 as a supportive year: help from others, smoother teamwork and good timing for partnerships. Do not let the easy mood replace preparation.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Before birthday | 47 | 48 |
| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 49 | 50 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (戊午) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1978 it falls in 2038. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2048 and palsun (80th) in 2058.
The Horse returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Horse element comes back only every 60 years.
| Year | Sign | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| 1918 | Earth Horse 戊午 | Feb 11, 1918 – Jan 31, 1919 |
| 1930 | Metal Horse 庚午 | Jan 30, 1930 – Feb 16, 1931 |
| 1942 | Water Horse 壬午 | Feb 15, 1942 – Feb 4, 1943 |

| 2026 | Fire Horse 丙午 | Feb 17, 2026 – Feb 5, 2027 |
1978 is the Year of the Yang Earth Horse (戊午, Wù Wǔ). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 7, 1978 and ended on Jan 27, 1979, so people born in that window are Horses. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 7, 1978. Births from January 1 to Feb 6, 1978 belong to the Yin Fire Snake of 1977. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1978 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Goat is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Tiger and Dog (Three Harmony). The Rat is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Ox forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1978 turns 48 during 2026 and 49 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Six Harmony with the Goat. Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1978 is 무오-nyeon (무오년, Mu-O), the year of the 말, so people born then are 황금 말띠 — literally a yellow (gold) horse, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
