Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1942 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1942 is the Year of the Water Horse (壬午, Rén Wǔ), but only from Lunar New Year on Feb 15, 1942. A baby born on or after that date and up to Feb 4, 1943 is a Horse; anyone born from January 1 to Feb 14, 1942 is a Yin Metal Snake (1941).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1942 that date was February 15, 1942.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Horse year) | Feb 15, 1942 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Horse year | Feb 4, 1943 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 15, 1942 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 15, 1942 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 4, 1942, 19:48 Korea time (Feb 4 18:48 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1942 |
In 1942 Ipchun (Feb 4) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 15), so babies born from Feb 4 to Feb 14 have a 壬午 (Water Horse) year pillar in Saju but are still Snakes in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1942 is stem 壬 (Im / Rén, Yang Water) on branch 午 (O, the Horse), number 19 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Water Horse” rather than just “Horse”.
| Heavenly stem | 壬 Im · Water 水 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 午 O · Horse |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Horse | Fire (火) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Willow Wood 楊柳木 (Korean 양류목) |
| Same pair repeats | 1882, 1942, 2002 |
Reading the element. Water is the element of winter, depth and flow. Water years are associated with intelligence, intuition, diplomacy and the ability to adapt to any container. Tradition warns of over-flexibility: Water can drift, keep options open too long or hide its real feelings. For a Water year the keywords are wisdom, adaptability and communication. The Horse itself carries Fire as its fixed element, so this year blends water energy with fire qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1942 and 1943 are Willow Wood (楊柳木), pictured as willow branches by the water: grace, flexibility and the ability to bend in a storm without breaking.
The same 壬午 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Im-O day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1942 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 壬午 Rén Wǔ · Water Horse year | Feb 15, 1942 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Nhâm Ngọ · Ngọ (Ngựa, horse) | Tết Feb 15 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1942 is called the year of the 검은 말띠 (black horse). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1942 counts as uma (午, Horse) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: free-spirited, energetic, sociable, direct + wisdom, adaptability and communication
Tradition paints the Horse as cheerful and restless: quick to act, warm in company and happiest with open space and a goal to run toward.
The horse stands at due south and at midday, the peak of yang energy. Fire Horse years carry special folklore in Japan (hinoeuma): births in Japan fell by about a quarter in 1966 because of the superstition, according to national vital statistics.
Where the Water element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Water Horse is perceptive, diplomatic, adaptable. Compared with the Metal Horse of 1930 and the Wood Horse of 1954, the 1942 version is read as the most adaptable and diplomatic Horse.
In love: Romantic and spontaneous, falling in love quickly; Horses need freedom and a partner who enjoys adventure. At work: At home in travel, sales, sport, media, performance, field work and fast-moving startups.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Horse born in 1942, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goat | Best match | 1931, 1943 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Tiger | Great match | 1938, 1950 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dog | Great match | 1934, 1946 | Both belong to the Fire trine (Tiger, Horse, Dog), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Horse | Same sign | 1930, 1954 | Same sign with a self-punishment flag: you understand each other but may amplify the same weaknesses. |
| Ox | Challenging | 1937, 1949 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Rat | Most challenging | 1936, 1948 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Horse that partner is the Ox. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Horse guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 3, 7 |
|---|---|
| Lucky colours (popular list) | yellow, green |
| Five-element colour of 1942 | black (dark blue) — from the Water stem 壬 |
| Element that supports Water | Metal (generates Water) → colour white |
| Direction of the Horse | South |
| Horse hour | 11:00–13:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 검은 말띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a supportive year for the Water Horse:
| Animal vs. Goat | Six Harmony with the Goat · Excellent |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Water controls Fire |
| Age during 2027 | 85 |
| Next Horse year | 2038 |
The Horse and Goat form a Six Harmony pair, so tradition counts 2027 as a supportive year: help from others, smoother teamwork and good timing for partnerships. Do not let the easy mood replace preparation.
Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|

| Before birthday | 83 | 84 |
| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 85 | 86 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (壬午) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1942 it falls in 2002 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2012 and palsun (80th) in 2022.
The Horse returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Water Horse element comes back only every 60 years.

1942 is the Year of the Yang Water Horse (壬午, Rén Wǔ). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 15, 1942 and ended on Feb 4, 1943, so people born in that window are Horses. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 15, 1942. Births from January 1 to Feb 14, 1942 belong to the Yin Metal Snake of 1941. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 4, 1942 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Goat is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Tiger and Dog (Three Harmony). The Rat is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Ox forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1942 turns 84 during 2026 and 85 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Six Harmony with the Goat. Water puts out Fire, so your element is the one in control. In traditional terms the year becomes a "wealth" year: opportunities you have to chase and manage, with gains that reflect the work invested. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1942 is 임오-nyeon (임오년, Im-O), the year of the 말, so people born then are 검은 말띠 — literally a black horse, from the Water colour of the Water stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
