Chinese zodiac by birth year · 1948 · Updated 3 Nov 2026 · Hong Life
1948 is the Year of the Earth Rat (戊子, Wù Zǐ), but only from Lunar New Year on Feb 10, 1948. A baby born on or after that date and up to Jan 28, 1949 is a Rat; anyone born from January 1 to Feb 9, 1948 is a Yin Fire Pig (1947).
Personality, compatibility and luck readings below are cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
The Chinese zodiac does not change on January 1. It follows the lunisolar calendar, so each animal year starts at Lunar New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice, which always lands between January 21 and February 20. For 1948 that date was February 10, 1948.
| Chinese Lunar New Year (start of the Rat year) | Feb 10, 1948 |
|---|---|
| Last day of the Rat year | Jan 28, 1949 |
| Korean Seollal (설날) | Feb 10, 1948 (same day) |
| Vietnamese Tết | Feb 10, 1948 (same day) |
| Ipchun / Lichun 立春 (Saju & Bazi year change) | Feb 5, 1948, 06:42 Korea time (Feb 5 5:42 Beijing) |
| Japan (eto 干支 by calendar year) | Jan 1 – Dec 31, 1948 |
In 1948 Ipchun (Feb 5) came before Lunar New Year (Feb 10), so babies born from Feb 5 to Feb 9 have a 戊子 (Earth Rat) year pillar in Saju but are still Pigs in the popular zodiac.
Every year in the 60-year cycle pairs one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve earthly branches. 1948 is stem 戊 (Mu / Wù, Yang Earth) on branch 子 (Ja, the Rat), number 25 of 60 in the cycle. The stem gives the year its element, which is why people say “Earth Rat” rather than just “Rat”.
| Heavenly stem | 戊 Mu · Earth 土 |
|---|---|
| Earthly branch | 子 Ja · Rat |
| Yin or yang | Yang (Yang years end in an even digit) |
| Fixed element of the Rat | Water (水) |
| Nayin (納音) sound element | Thunderbolt Fire 霹靂火 (Korean 벽력화) |
| Same pair repeats | 1888, 1948, 2008 |
Reading the element. Earth is the element of the centre and of harvest. Earth years are read as patient, realistic and dependable, with a talent for mediating and keeping a group together. Tradition notes a tendency to worry, to resist change and to keep feelings to oneself for too long. For a Earth year the keywords are stability, practicality and trust. The Rat itself carries Water as its fixed element, so this year blends earth energy with water qualities.
The nayin image. The 60 pairs also have 30 poetic “nayin” names, shared by two neighbouring years. 1948 and 1949 are Thunderbolt Fire (霹靂火), pictured as a thunderbolt: sudden energy, bold breakthroughs and a temper that flashes and clears quickly.
The same 戊子 pair is also a Saju day pillar; see the Mu-Ja day-pillar article for how the combination is read when it appears on the day of birth.
| Tradition | Name of 1948 | Year starts |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese | 戊子 Wù Zǐ · Earth Rat year | Feb 10, 1948 |
| Vietnamese con giáp | Mậu Tý · Tý (Chuột, rat) | Tết Feb 10 |
Koreans often name the year with a colour taken from the stem element: Wood years are blue-green (청), Fire red (적), Earth yellow or golden (황), Metal white (백) and Water black (흑). That is why 1948 is called the year of the 황금 쥐띠 (yellow (gold) rat). Japan has counted eto by the Gregorian year since 1873, so in Japan everyone born in 1948 counts as ne (子, Rat) regardless of the lunar date. Vietnam uses the same animal for this year.
Keywords: quick-witted, resourceful, thrifty, sociable + stability, practicality and trust
Rat years are traditionally read as alert, curious and quick to spot an opportunity. Rats are said to be good with money and planning, comfortable in social settings and able to land on their feet when circumstances change.
In the folk tale of the Great Race, the Rat rode on the Ox’s back and jumped ahead at the finish line, which is why it opens the twelve-year cycle. The story is a neat summary of how tradition sees the sign: clever, opportunistic and good at using whatever resources are at hand.
Where the Earth element shows. Tradition says the stem colours the animal: a Earth Rat is reliable, patient, grounded. Compared with the Fire Rat of 1936 and the Metal Rat of 1960, the 1948 version is read as the steadiest and most practical Rat.
In love: Affectionate and attentive once committed, but cautious at the start; Rats like a partner who is clever and who shares their interest in building security together. At work: Strong in roles that reward speed and resourcefulness: business, sales, research, finance, writing and anything that involves spotting patterns early.
Zodiac personality descriptions are folklore. Real personality is shaped by upbringing, culture and choices, and people born in the same year differ enormously.
Classical compatibility looks at how the two birth-year branches relate on the zodiac wheel. Signs four places apart form a Three Harmony trine, specific pairs form a Six Harmony, and signs directly opposite each other clash. For a Rat born in 1948, the nearest-age examples are:
| Sign | Rating | Nearby birth years | Why (tradition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ox | Best match | 1937, 1949 | A Six Harmony pair: tradition calls these "secret friends" who quietly complete each other. |
| Monkey | Great match | 1944, 1956 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Dragon | Great match | 1940, 1952 | Both belong to the Water trine (Monkey, Rat, Dragon), sharing goals and a similar pace. |
| Rat | Same sign | 1936, 1960 | Same sign: easy understanding and shared habits, with the risk of shared blind spots. |
| Goat | Challenging | 1943, 1955 | A Harm pair: small misunderstandings can pile up; regular honest talk helps. |
| Horse | Most challenging | 1942, 1954 | Directly opposite on the zodiac wheel: different rhythms and priorities, so compromise is essential. |
| Rabbit | Tension | 1939, 1951 | Part of a Punishment group: each can trigger the other’s stubborn side. |
Korean folk matchmaking (gunghap, 궁합) also watches for wonjin (원진) pairs, said to breed resentment; for the Rat that partner is the Goat. See the full 12×12 compatibility chart or the Year of the Rat guide. A real compatibility reading in Saju compares all eight characters of both charts, not just the year animal.
| Lucky numbers (popular list) | 2, 3 |

| Lucky colours (popular list) | blue, gold, green |
| Five-element colour of 1948 | yellow — from the Earth stem 戊 |
| Element that supports Earth | Fire (generates Earth) → colour red |
| Direction of the Rat | North |
| Rat hour | 23:00–01:00 |
Two different ideas get mixed together online. The “lucky numbers and colours” lists are a modern popular folklore that varies from one website to another. The five-element colours are older: they come from the correspondence of Wood–green, Fire–red, Earth–yellow, Metal–white and Water–black, which is also behind Korean names such as 황금 쥐띠. Treat both as fun cultural trivia.
2027 is Jeongmi (丁未), the Yin Fire Goat — called the “red sheep” year (붉은 양띠) in Korea. In the Chinese calendar it begins on Feb 6, 2027 and ends on Jan 25, 2028; Korea celebrates Seollal on Feb 7, 2027 because the new moon falls just after midnight Korea time. For Saju, the year pillar changes at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027 at about 10:46 KST. Tradition reads 2027 as a year to move carefully for the Earth Rat:
| Animal vs. Goat | Harm with Tai Sui (害太岁) · Challenging |
|---|---|
| Element vs. Fire stem | Fire feeds Earth |
| Age during 2027 | 79 |
| Next Rat year | 2032 |
Rat and Goat form a Harm pair (and a Korean wonjin pair), so folk readings warn of misunderstandings, gossip or small setbacks in 2027. Over-communicate, double-check messages and avoid taking sides in other people’s quarrels.
Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar.

| Age | 2026 | 2027 |

| Traditional Korean count age (unofficial) | 79 | 80 |
The 60-year cycle gives East Asian birthdays their biggest milestone: when the same stem-and-branch pair (戊子) returns, a person has completed one full cycle. In Korea this is hwangap (환갑) and in Japan kanreki; for people born in 1948 it falls in 2008 — already celebrated. Chilsun (70th) follows in 2018 and palsun (80th) in 2028.
The Rat returns every 12 years, but the element changes each time, so the same Earth Rat element comes back only every 60 years.
| Year | Sign | Dates |

| 1912 | Water Rat 壬子 | Feb 18, 1912 – Feb 5, 1913 |

1948 is the Year of the Yang Earth Rat (戊子, Wù Zǐ). The year began at Lunar New Year on Feb 10, 1948 and ended on Jan 28, 1949, so people born in that window are Rats. This is cultural tradition, shared for entertainment.
Only if you were born on or after Feb 10, 1948. Births from January 1 to Feb 9, 1948 belong to the Yin Fire Pig of 1947. Korean Saju uses a different boundary, Ipchun on Feb 5, 1948 (Korea time), for the year pillar.
Traditionally the Ox is the best match (Six Harmony), followed by the Monkey and Dragon (Three Harmony). The Horse is the opposite, clashing sign, and the Goat forms a Harm pair.
Someone born in 1948 turns 78 during 2026 and 79 during 2027 (international age; before the birthday they are a year younger). Korea’s traditional count age would add one year, but it has not been used officially since June 2023.
Harm with Tai Sui (害太岁). Fire generates Earth, so for an Earth-year sign the Fire Goat year is traditionally supportive: help from mentors, study, documents and recognition. The Goat itself is also an Earth branch, a double dose of the familiar. Read it as cultural tradition for fun, not as a prediction.
In Korean, 1948 is 무자-nyeon (무자년, Mu-Ja), the year of the 쥐, so people born then are 황금 쥐띠 — literally a yellow (gold) rat, from the Earth colour of the Earth stem.
The year animal is only one of the eight characters in a Korean Saju (Four Pillars) chart. Enter your birth date and time to see your month, day and hour pillars, five-element balance and 2027 forecast.
