Gap-Ja day pillar personality
- thinker
- learner
- idealist
The first pillar of the 60-year cycle pairs Yang Wood with the Water Rat. The roots are soaked in Water, the element that feeds Wood, so tradition reads a studious, idealistic mind with plenty of inner resources. The catch is temperature: a tree in winter water waits for sunshine, so Gap-Ja people often have more ideas than action until warmth (Fire: activity, people, expression) gets them moving.
The Gap day master
Gap (甲) is the great tree: upright, ambitious and growing toward one clear goal. Gap people tend to set direction for others, keep their word and dislike bending their principles.
Sitting on Ja (子)
Ja (子) is midwinter water at midnight: quiet on the surface, alive underneath. As a day branch it gives an inner world that is clever, resourceful and private. Its main hidden stem, 癸, is Direct Resource to a Gap day master (learning, support, documents), so the inner self leans toward learning.
Like every one of the 60 pillars, Gap-Ja pairs a stem and a branch of the same polarity, so it is a purely yang pillar: outgoing, initiating and direct in expression.
Hidden stems and the 12 life stages
Every earthly branch carries one to three hidden stems (지장간, jijanggan). Their share follows the traditional day-count table (월률분야) used by the site’s Saju calculator. Each hidden stem becomes a ten god when compared with the day master 甲.
| Hidden stem | Element | Role | Days | Ten god | Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 壬 Im | Yang Water | residual qi | 10 | Indirect Resource | intuition, unusual learning, solitude |
| 癸 Gye | Yin Water | main qi | 20 | Direct Resource | learning, support, documents |
Life stage: Bath (목욕)
Bath (Mogyok) is the infant being washed: exposed, curious and changeable. Tradition reads it as sensitivity, a strong sense of style and a restless search for new experiences, especially in romance. For Gap, that stage falls exactly on Ja, so the pillar’s own branch shows change and charm.
Five-element balance
On its own, the Gap-Ja pillar is led by Wood (50%), followed by Water (50%). Fire, Earth and Metal are absent from the pillar itself.
One pillar is only two of the eight characters in a full chart; the year, month and hour pillars often fill the gaps. Tradition treats under-represented elements as balancing themes, for example Fire → warm light, exercise that makes you sweat, social plans; Earth → regular meals, routines, tidy spaces, gardening; Metal → decluttering, deep breathing, clear decisions.
Gap-Ja in love and compatibility
The day branch is called the spouse palace. With Direct Resource in the spouse palace, care and emotional support flow easily. Tradition reads a nurturing, comforting partnership, with a gentle warning against over-dependence.
As a Gap day master, Gap-Ja is loyal and protective, likes to take the lead and plan the future together, but can be slow to say sorry. Cardinal (“peach-blossom”) branch: Ja, O, Myo and Yu are the four cardinal branches. Tradition links them with Dohwa (桃花, peach blossom): charm, visibility and popularity.
Compatible and challenging day pillars
- Best traditional match: Gi-Chuk (己丑) — stems combine (甲 + 己 → Earth) and branches form a six-harmony (子 + 丑).
- Friendly branches: Chuk (Ox) (six-harmony) and Sin (申) and Jin (辰) (three-harmony Water frame).
- Most tension: Gyeong-O (庚午) — the branches clash (子 vs 午) and the stems clash.
Compatibility in Saju compares whole charts; the day pillar is only one piece. Treat this as a conversation starter, not a verdict on any relationship.
Gap-Ja day pillar for women and men
Personality traits above apply to everyone. Gender enters only through an old convention: classical texts treat Wealth as the spouse star in a man’s chart and Officer in a woman’s chart. Modern readers apply the spouse palace to any partner.
Gap-Ja woman
No Officer star sits inside the Gap-Ja spouse palace, so for a woman’s chart classical texts read partner timing from the other pillars and the ten-year luck cycles. The palace’s main star, Direct Resource, sets the tone of the relationship instead.
Gap-Ja man
No Wealth star sits inside the Gap-Ja spouse palace, so for a man’s chart classical texts read partner timing from the other pillars and the ten-year luck cycles. The palace’s main star, Direct Resource, sets the tone of the relationship instead.
Gap-Ja career and work style
Career themes in Saju come from the day master and from the star in the spouse palace, which also shows how a person behaves in private and in partnerships.
- From the Gap stem: planning and strategy, education and training, management and public service, founding a project from zero.
- From Direct Resource in the day branch: education, academia, publishing, certification-based professions.
- From the Bath stage: fields that reward style, trends and change.
Work that draws on the pillar’s keywords (thinker, learner, idealist) tends to feel most natural for Gap-Ja.

Gap-Ja day pillar in 2027 (Jeongmi year)
2027 is the Jeongmi (丁未) year, Yin Fire over the Earth Goat, running from Ipchun (around 4 February 2027) to Ipchun 2028 in Saju.
| 2027 factor | For Gap-Ja |
|---|---|
| Year stem 丁 Jeong | Hurting Officer |
| Year branch 未 Mi (main qi 己) | Direct Wealth |
| Gap at Mi | Tomb stage |
| Day branch 子 vs 未 | Wonjin / harm |
For Gap day masters 2027 brings Jeong (丁) as Hurting Officer and the Mi branch’s main qi as Direct Wealth. Tradition reads a year of expressing ideas and turning them into money: good for launching side projects, presenting work or changing roles, with a reminder to choose words carefully with bosses.
Ja and Mi form a Wonjin (resentment) and Hae (harm) pair. Tradition advises double-checking promises and tone in close relationships during 2027.
Gap-Ja days in 2027: Feb 14, Apr 15, Jun 14, Aug 13, Oct 12, Dec 11. Some people like to schedule small personal milestones on their own pillar’s days, purely for fun.
Year readings are traditional entertainment. Make decisions about money, health or relationships on facts and professional advice.
Traditional labels and concept notes
- Cardinal (“peach-blossom”) branch — Ja, O, Myo and Yu are the four cardinal branches. Tradition links them with Dohwa (桃花, peach blossom): charm, visibility and popularity.
- Nayin: Gold in the Sea (海中金), the “sound element” shared with Eul-Chuk (乙丑).
- Empty branches (gongmang, 空亡): Sul and Hae (戌亥), because Gap-Ja belongs to the decade that starts with 甲子.
- Same pillar as the years 1924, 1984, 2044 (for the year pillar, not the day).
Labels such as Goegang or Baekho come from classical star lists that vary between schools. They are historical vocabulary, not predictions.

How to find your day pillar
- Open the free Korean Saju calculator and enter your birth date, time and city.
- Read the day column of your chart: the top character is your day master, the bottom one your spouse palace.
- Check births near midnight: schools differ on whether 11 pm–midnight belongs to the same day or the next.
- Unlike the year and month, the day pillar ignores solar terms: it is a continuous 60-day count, so Gap-Ja returns every 60 days.
