How the numbers are worked out

Every page uses the ATO’s 2026-27 resident rates — nil to $18,200, 15% to $45,000 (down from 16%), 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above — less the low income tax offset (up to $700), plus the 2% Medicare levy with the low-income phase-in. HELP repayments follow the marginal system that starts in 2026-27: 15c per dollar above $69,528. Annual pay assumes 38 ordinary hours a week, the maximum under the National Employment Standards, for 52 paid weeks. Minimum wages come from the Fair Work Commission’s 2025-26 Annual Wage Review and median earnings from the ABS (August 2025). These are estimates; your payslip’s PAYG withholding may differ slightly.

Permanent, part-time or casual?

A part-timer on the same hourly rate keeps a larger percentage of pay, because the $18,200 tax-free threshold and the low income tax offset cover more of a smaller income. A casual is paid 25% more per hour but gets no paid annual leave or personal leave — over a year with six weeks off unpaid, the casual is only about 10% ahead instead of 25%. Each article shows both, side by side.

FAQ

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary in Australia?

Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours and then by 52. For the standard 38-hour full-time week that is the rate × 1,976; for 30 hours it is × 1,560 and for 20 hours × 1,040.

The national minimum wage is $26.44 an hour or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, up 5.97% from $24.95. Casuals covered by the national minimum wage get at least $33.05 with the 25% loading. Full time, $26.44 an hour leaves about $1,739 a fortnight after tax.

$30 an hour is how much a year after tax?

$30 an hour on 38 hours a week is $59,280 a year, which leaves $49,901 after 2026-27 income tax and Medicare — $1,919 a fortnight.

How much is $25 an hour after tax?

$25 an hour full time is $49,400 a year and $43,331 after tax ($1,667 a fortnight). Note that $25 is below the $26.44 adult minimum wage from 1 July 2026.

What is the median hourly wage in Australia?
