Hourly to annual salary in Australia: $70 an hour by pay period

To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary in Australia, multiply it by your weekly hours and by 52. The National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week for full-time staff, so $70 × 38 × 52 = $138,320. A day is 7.6 hours; paid annual leave and public holidays are already inside the 52 weeks for permanent employees. Most Australians are paid fortnightly, so that column is the one to check against your payslip.

How $70 an hour is taxed in 2026-27

From 1 July 2026 the first resident tax rate fell from 16% to 15% (rates: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above). On $138,320 that means $26,800 at 15%, $90,000 at 30%, $3,320 at 37% — $32,248 before offsets. Your income is above $66,667, so no low income tax offset applies: income tax is $32,248. The 2% Medicare levy adds $2,766. Compared with 2025-26 rates, the 15% cut puts $268 a year ($10 a fortnight) back in your pocket. Your marginal rate on the next dollar is 39% including Medicare.

You pay no income tax until yearly income passes $18,200 — at $70 that is 5.0 hours a week. HELP repayments start at 19.1 hours a week ($69,528). The 37% bracket begins at 37.1 hours a week ($135,000) and the 45% top rate at 52.2 hours ($190,000).

Contractor-level pay. $70 an hour is 1.6× the ABS median and 2.6× the minimum wage. Rates like this are common for senior specialists, IT and engineering contractors, locums and tradespeople running their own business — but a contractor’s rate often has to cover super, leave, insurance and gaps between jobs that an employee gets for free. As an employee on 38 hours, $138,320 reaches the 37% bracket (above $135,000) and the full HELP repayment scale.

HELP / HECS repayments on $70 an hour

From the 2026-27 income year, compulsory HELP repayments use a marginal system: nothing up to $69,528 of repayment income, then 15c for each dollar above it, $9,028 plus 17c per dollar above $129,717, and 10% of total income above $186,050 (ATO). At 38 hours your $138,320 is $68,792 over the threshold, so the ATO collects about $10,491 a year ($403 a fortnight) and your marginal rate rises from 39% to 56%. Even on 30 hours ($109,200) you would repay $5,951. Repayment income also adds reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses, so salary sacrifice does not dodge HELP.

Tips to keep more of $70 an hour

Claim the tax-free threshold once. Tick “yes” to the $18,200 tax-free threshold on your TFN declaration for your main job only. With two jobs, claiming it on both usually leaves a tax bill at the end of the year.
Watch your super land — Payday Super. From 1 July 2026 employers must pay the 12% super guarantee at the same time as wages and it must reach your fund within 7 business days. At $70 on 38 hours that is about $638 a fortnight — check your fund app matches your payslip.
Salary sacrifice into super. Before-tax super contributions are taxed at 15% inside the fund instead of your 39% marginal rate. The concessional cap is $30,000 a year including your employer’s $16,598.
Overtime and penalty rates. Each extra ordinary hour at $70 adds about $42.70 after tax and Medicare. Award overtime is often paid at 150% or 200%, so check your payslip shows the right multiplier.
Keep receipts for work deductions. Work-related expenses such as uniforms, tools, union fees and some car or phone costs can reduce taxable income. Claims need records and must be directly related to earning your income.
