Hourly to annual salary in Australia: $45 an hour by pay period
To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary in Australia, multiply it by your weekly hours and by 52. The National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week for full-time staff, so $45 × 38 × 52 = $88,920. A day is 7.6 hours; paid annual leave and public holidays are already inside the 52 weeks for permanent employees. Most Australians are paid fortnightly, so that column is the one to check against your payslip.

How $45 an hour is taxed in 2026-27
From 1 July 2026 the first resident tax rate fell from 16% to 15% (rates: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above). On $88,920 that means $26,800 at 15%, $43,920 at 30% — $17,196 before offsets. Your income is above $66,667, so no low income tax offset applies: income tax is $17,196. The 2% Medicare levy adds $1,778. Compared with 2025-26 rates, the 15% cut puts $268 a year ($10 a fortnight) back in your pocket. Your marginal rate on the next dollar is 32% including Medicare.
You pay no income tax until yearly income passes $18,200 — at $45 that is 7.8 hours a week. HELP repayments start at 29.7 hours a week ($69,528). The 37% bracket begins at 57.7 hours a week ($135,000).
Above the median. $45 is 5% more than the $42.90 ABS median hourly pay and 1.7× the national minimum wage. A 38-hour week gives $88,920 a year, all of it taxed at no more than 30%. Private hospital cover only matters for the Medicare levy surcharge once income passes about $101,000 for singles (2025-26 threshold).
HELP / HECS repayments on $45 an hour
From the 2026-27 income year, compulsory HELP repayments use a marginal system: nothing up to $69,528 of repayment income, then 15c for each dollar above it, $9,028 plus 17c per dollar above $129,717, and 10% of total income above $186,050 (ATO). At 38 hours your $88,920 is $19,392 over the threshold, so the ATO collects about $2,909 a year ($112 a fortnight) and your marginal rate rises from 32% to 47%. Even on 30 hours ($70,200) you would repay $101. Repayment income also adds reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses, so salary sacrifice does not dodge HELP.

Casual loading: is $56.25 really more?
A casual employee gets a 25% loading instead of paid annual leave (4 weeks), personal/carer’s leave (10 days) and notice. At $45 base that means $56.25 an hour. Work 38 hours for a full 52 weeks and the casual earns $111,150 — $22,230 more than a permanent — but take the same 6 weeks off unpaid and the casual year is $98,325, still $9,405 ahead of the permanent’s $88,920. Super is 12% of ordinary pay for both.
$45 an hour vs the minimum wage and the ABS median
Compared with the national minimum wage ($26.44), $45 an hour adds $36,675 a year before tax and $24,722 after tax on a 38-hour week. It also beats the ABS median hourly earnings of $42.90 by $4,150 a year gross. The ABS reports median weekly earnings in the main job of $1,425 (August 2025, all employees including part-timers). A $1 an hour rise from here is worth $1,344 a year after tax.
