Hourly to annual salary in Australia: $25 an hour by pay period
To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary in Australia, multiply it by your weekly hours and by 52. The National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week for full-time staff, so $25 × 38 × 52 = $49,400. A day is 7.6 hours; paid annual leave and public holidays are already inside the 52 weeks for permanent employees. Most Australians are paid fortnightly, so that column is the one to check against your payslip.

How $25 an hour is taxed in 2026-27
From 1 July 2026 the first resident tax rate fell from 16% to 15% (rates: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above). On $49,400 that means $26,800 at 15%, $4,400 at 30% — $5,340 before offsets. The low income tax offset then removes $259, leaving $5,081. The 2% Medicare levy adds $988. Compared with 2025-26 rates, the 15% cut puts $268 a year ($10 a fortnight) back in your pocket. Your marginal rate on the next dollar is 34% including Medicare.
You pay no income tax until yearly income passes $18,200 — at $25 that is 14.0 hours a week. HELP repayments start at 53.5 hours a week ($69,528), so a full-time week on this rate never triggers them without overtime. The 37% bracket ($135,000+) is out of reach at any realistic number of hours.
Below the 2026 minimum. $25 sits between last year’s $24.95 minimum and the $26.44 national minimum wage that applies from 1 July 2026, so an adult employee on this rate full time is underpaid by about $2,845 a year. Junior, apprentice and supported-wage rates can legitimately be lower, and many workers are covered by a modern award with its own (usually higher) minimum — most award rates rose 4.75% on 1 July 2026.
HELP / HECS repayments on $25 an hour
From the 2026-27 income year, compulsory HELP repayments use a marginal system: nothing up to $69,528 of repayment income, then 15c for each dollar above it, $9,028 plus 17c per dollar above $129,717, and 10% of total income above $186,050 (ATO). At 38 hours your $49,400 is below the threshold, so a HELP debt is not repaid through payroll — but indexation still applies each 1 June. Repayment income also adds reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses, so salary sacrifice does not dodge HELP.

$25 an hour part-time and casual
Here is the same base rate across common Australian contracts, permanent and casual. At 20 hours $25 keeps 98% of gross pay, against 88% at 38 hours.
| Contract (per week) | Gross / yr | Tax + Medicare | Net / yr | Net / fortnight | Super 12% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Permanent 20 h | $26,000 | $470 | $25,530 | $982 | $3,120 |
| Permanent 30 h | $39,000 | $3,275 | $35,725 | $1,374 | $4,680 |
| Permanent 38 h | $49,400 | $6,069 | $43,331 | $1,667 | $5,928 |
| Casual 20 h ($31.25) | $32,500 | $1,894 | $30,606 | $1,177 | $3,900 |
| Casual 30 h ($31.25) | $48,750 | $5,851 | $42,899 | $1,650 | $5,850 |
| Casual 38 h ($31.25) | $61,750 | $10,206 | $51,544 | $1,982 | $7,410 |
Casual loading: is $31.25 really more?
A casual employee gets a 25% loading instead of paid annual leave (4 weeks), personal/carer’s leave (10 days) and notice. At $25 base that means $31.25 an hour. Work 38 hours for a full 52 weeks and the casual earns $61,750 — $12,350 more than a permanent — but take the same 6 weeks off unpaid and the casual year is $54,625, still $5,225 ahead of the permanent’s $49,400. Super is 12% of ordinary pay for both.
$25 an hour vs the minimum wage and the ABS median
Compared with the national minimum wage ($26.44), $25 an hour is $2,845 a year less before tax and $1,892 less after tax. Reaching the ABS median of $42.90 an hour would add $35,370 gross — about $23,793 after tax. The ABS reports median weekly earnings in the main job of $1,425 (August 2025, all employees including part-timers). A $1 an hour rise from here is worth $1,314 a year after tax.
