Hourly to annual salary in Australia: $26 an hour by pay period

To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary in Australia, multiply it by your weekly hours and by 52. The National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week for full-time staff, so $26 × 38 × 52 = $51,376. A day is 7.6 hours; paid annual leave and public holidays are already inside the 52 weeks for permanent employees. Most Australians are paid fortnightly, so that column is the one to check against your payslip.

How $26 an hour is taxed in 2026-27

From 1 July 2026 the first resident tax rate fell from 16% to 15% (rates: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above). On $51,376 that means $26,800 at 15%, $6,376 at 30% — $5,933 before offsets. The low income tax offset then removes $229, leaving $5,703. The 2% Medicare levy adds $1,028. Compared with 2025-26 rates, the 15% cut puts $268 a year ($10 a fortnight) back in your pocket. Your marginal rate on the next dollar is 34% including Medicare.

You pay no income tax until yearly income passes $18,200 — at $26 that is 13.5 hours a week. HELP repayments start at 51.4 hours a week ($69,528), so a full-time week on this rate never triggers them without overtime. The 37% bracket ($135,000+) is out of reach at any realistic number of hours.

Below the 2026 minimum. $26 sits between last year’s $24.95 minimum and the $26.44 national minimum wage that applies from 1 July 2026, so an adult employee on this rate full time is underpaid by about $869 a year. Junior, apprentice and supported-wage rates can legitimately be lower, and many workers are covered by a modern award with its own (usually higher) minimum — most award rates rose 4.75% on 1 July 2026.

$26 an hour part-time and casual

Part-time work changes your tax rate as well as your pay, because more of a smaller salary sits under the $18,200 tax-free threshold. At 20 hours $26 keeps 98% of gross pay, against 87% at 38 hours.

Casual loading: is $32.50 really more?

A casual employee gets a 25% loading instead of paid annual leave (4 weeks), personal/carer’s leave (10 days) and notice. At $26 base that means $32.50 an hour. Work 38 hours for a full 52 weeks and the casual earns $64,220 — $12,844 more than a permanent — but take the same 6 weeks off unpaid and the casual year is $56,810, still $5,434 ahead of the permanent’s $51,376. Super is 12% of ordinary pay for both.

Permanent or casual at $26? A year side by side

Permanent versus casual at $26 an hour, 38 hours a week: permanent earns $51,376 a year including about 6 weeks of paid leave; a casual on $32.50 working 46 weeks earns $56,810. Permanent$26/h · 52 wks $51,376 Casual$32.50/h · 46 wks $56,810 Gold = paid leave (≈6 weeks)

Gross pay before tax, 38 hours a week. Casual assumes 6 unpaid weeks off a year to match a permanent worker’s 4 weeks’ annual leave plus 10 days’ personal leave. Illustrative estimate.

HELP / HECS repayments on $26 an hour

From the 2026-27 income year, compulsory HELP repayments use a marginal system: nothing up to $69,528 of repayment income, then 15c for each dollar above it, $9,028 plus 17c per dollar above $129,717, and 10% of total income above $186,050 (ATO). At 38 hours your $51,376 is below the threshold, so a HELP debt is not repaid through payroll — but indexation still applies each 1 June. Repayment income also adds reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses, so salary sacrifice does not dodge HELP.

Tips to keep more of $26 an hour

Check the award, not just the minimum. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool (PACT) to find your award classification. Most award rates rose 4.75% from 1 July 2026, and penalty rates apply for weekends, evenings and public holidays in many awards.
Claim the tax-free threshold once. Tick “yes” to the $18,200 tax-free threshold on your TFN declaration for your main job only. With two jobs, claiming it on both usually leaves a tax bill at the end of the year.
Watch your super land — Payday Super. From 1 July 2026 employers must pay the 12% super guarantee at the same time as wages and it must reach your fund within 7 business days. At $26 on 38 hours that is about $237 a fortnight — check your fund app matches your payslip.
Casual for 6 months? Ask about conversion. Casual employees can notify their employer that they want to become permanent after 6 months (12 months with a small business) if their work has been regular. You give up the 25% loading but gain paid leave and notice.
Overtime and penalty rates. Each extra ordinary hour at $26 adds about $17.29 after tax and Medicare. Award overtime is often paid at 150% or 200%, so check your payslip shows the right multiplier.
