FAQ

How is UK take-home pay calculated for 2026/27?

Take-home pay is gross salary minus income tax and employee National Insurance. Income tax uses the £12,570 personal allowance and the 20%, 40% and 45% bands (six bands from 19% to 48% in Scotland). Employee NI is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Student loans and pension contributions are deducted on top if you have them.

How much is £50,000 after tax in 2026/27?

About £39,520 a year (£3,293 a month) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and £38,024 in Scotland, with no pension or student loan.

How much is £100,000 after tax?

About £68,557 a year, or £5,713 a month, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Above £100,000 the personal allowance starts to shrink, creating an effective 62% marginal rate up to £125,140.

Are the tax thresholds changing in 2026/27?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the personal allowance (£12,570), higher-rate threshold (£50,270) and additional-rate threshold (£125,140) stay frozen until April 2031. In Scotland the starter and basic rate bands were raised for 2026/27, so the 21% intermediate rate now starts at £29,527.
