On a $65,000 salary a single filer with a standard W-4 should expect a federal refund of about $0 — withholding is designed to match the $5,620 of tax. The big refunds come from what your W-4 doesn’t know about: about $2,200 for a head of household with one child, $4,589 for a one-income married couple with two kids, and $328–$2,736 from the new overtime, tips and senior deductions.
Estimated tax refund on $65,000 by filing status (2026 tax year)
Each row is the same $65,000 of W-2 wages run through the 2026 brackets, then compared with what the IRS Publication 15-T tables withhold when the W-4 has only the filing-status box checked. Your refund is simply withheld minus tax owed, plus any refundable credits.
| Scenario (2026 wages $65,000) | Tax owed | Withheld | Refund | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single, no kids | $5,620 | $5,620 | ≈ $0 | W-4 tables are built to match the tax |
| Single, $5,000 of pay as a bonus | $5,620 | $6,120 | $500 | bonus withheld at the flat 22% rate |
| Single, hourly, 200 overtime hours | $5,292 | $5,620 | $328 | $2,731 overtime premium deducted |
| Single, $22,800 of it in tips | $2,884 | $5,620 | $2,736 | tips deduction on Schedule 1-A |
| Single, $2,500 new-car loan interest | $5,320 | $5,620 | $300 | car-loan interest deduction |
| Single, age 65+ | $4,654 | $5,620 | $966 | extra $2,050 + senior deduction |
| Head of household, 1 child | $2,348 | $4,548 | $2,200 | Child Tax Credit + any EITC |
| Married (one earner), 2 kids | $0 +$1,149 refundable | $3,440 | $4,589 | 2 × $2,200 CTC + any EITC |
| Same family, kids entered on W-4 Step 3 | $0 +$1,149 refundable | $0 | $1,149 | credits already taken out of each paycheck |
Refund = withheld − tax after non-refundable credits + refundable credits (ACTC, EITC). Highlighted: largest refund. Married rows assume one earner. Estimates, not tax advice.
Example: Priya, $65,000
Priya is a lab technician who bought a new U.S.-assembled SUV in 2026. The lender’s year-end statement shows $3,100 of interest paid in 2026. Withholding on a plain “Single” W-4: $5,620.
- Wages $65,000 − deductions (standard $16,100, car-loan interest $3,100) = taxable income $45,800.
- Tax from the single brackets: 10% × $12,400 = $1,240; 12% × $33,400 = $4,008 → $5,248.
- Refund = withheld $5,620 − tax after credits $5,248 = $372.
Her MAGI is under $100,000, so the full $10,000 cap applies and all $3,100 is deductible. She needs to enter the vehicle’s VIN on Schedule 1-A.
How the new OBBBA deductions can make a $65,000 refund bigger in 2027
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act added four deductions for 2025–2028 that you claim on the new Schedule 1-A whether or not you itemize. None of them is built into the default withholding tables, so if you qualify and didn’t update your W-4, the saving lands in your refund. At $65,000, you are in the 12% bracket, so every $1,000 of extra deduction cuts your tax by about $120.
- Overtime: 200 hours of time-and-a-half adds a $2,731 deduction → about $328 back. How it works.
- Tips: if $22,800 of the pay were qualified tips, the refund is about $2,736. Details.
- Age 65+: the extra $2,050 standard deduction plus the new senior deduction ($6,000 at this income) → about $966. Senior deduction guide.
- New car loan: $2,500 of interest on a new U.S.-assembled vehicle → about $300. Car loan rules.
These deductions lower taxable income but not AGI, so they don’t change EITC or Child Tax Credit eligibility. Social Security and Medicare still apply to tips and overtime.
Why your refund could still come out different
- Pre-tax 401(k) or HSA contributions. They lower both the tax and the withholding, so they do not create a refund on their own — they just shrink both bars in the chart.
- Side income. 1099 gig money, interest or a stock sale has no withholding by default. A few thousand dollars of it can erase a $2,200 refund.
- Bonus pay. In our scenario, $5,000 of the $65,000 arrives as a bonus withheld at the flat 22% rate. Because your bracket is 12%, that over-withholds and adds about $500 to the refund.
- Two jobs. Earn the same $65,000 from two $32,500 jobs without checking Step 2 on either W-4 and the result flips: about $3,440 withheld against $5,620 of tax — you’d owe roughly $2,180.
- A raise mid-year. Withholding is figured per paycheck on an annualized basis, so a raise is handled almost perfectly. It rarely moves the refund more than a few dollars.
At this income the Earned Income Tax Credit still pays something: $189 for a married couple with two kids. Claiming it (or the refundable part of the Child Tax Credit) means the IRS can’t release your refund before mid-February — the PATH Act hold.

State taxes on $65,000: a refund by state is a separate story
Everything above is federal. Your state return is filed separately, and whether it produces a refund depends on how much your employer withheld for the state. Here is the state income tax a single filer owes on $65,000 of wages in eight states (no local taxes):

Tax refund on $65,000: FAQ
How much federal tax is withheld from a $65,000 salary?
With a 2026 W-4 that only has the filing status checked, payroll withholds about $5,620 a year as a single filer ($216 per biweekly check), $4,548 as head of household and $3,440 as married filing jointly (one earner). Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) come on top and are never refunded.
Will I get a tax refund on $65,000 if I'm single with no kids?
Probably a small one or none. Our estimate is ≈ $0: the IRS withholding tables subtract the same $16,100 standard deduction your 1040 uses, so tax withheld and tax owed ($5,620) match. Refunds for single filers usually come from bonuses withheld at 22%, the new tips or overtime deductions, or credits.
How much is the refund for a family of four on $65,000?
For a married couple with two kids under 17 and one $65,000 W-2 job, we estimate about $4,589 if the W-4 did not list the children in Step 3. Most of that is the $2,200-per-child Child Tax Credit plus $189 of EITC. If the kids were entered in Step 3, the refund drops to about $1,149 because the credit was already paid out in bigger paychecks.
How much does no tax on overtime save on a $65,000 salary?
If $65,000 includes 200 hours of time-and-a-half overtime, the deductible premium is about $2,731 and the tax saving is about $328. Because withholding doesn't know about the deduction unless you add it to W-4 Step 4(b), that saving shows up as a refund in 2027.
Is this the same as my state tax refund?
No. These figures are federal only. Your state return is separate; on $65,000 a single filer owes roughly $1,975 in California, $2,645 in Georgia and $0 in Texas. Whether you get a state refund depends on your state withholding.
