Short answer

On a $120,000 salary a single filer with a standard W-4 should expect a federal refund of about $0 — withholding is designed to match the $17,570 of tax. The big refunds come from what your W-4 doesn’t know about: about $2,200 for a head of household with one child, $4,400 for a one-income married couple with two kids, and $1,109–$5,500 from the new overtime, tips and senior deductions.

Example: the Nguyens, $120,000, married with two kids

The Nguyens are a married couple with two kids and one W-2 job. The earner’s W-4 says “Married filing jointly” with nothing in Step 3. Federal withholding for the year: $10,040.

  1. Wages $120,000 − deductions (standard $32,200) = taxable income $87,800.
  2. Tax from the married-joint brackets: 10% × $24,800 = $2,480; 12% × $63,000 = $7,560 → $10,040.
  3. Credits: Child Tax Credit $4,400 (non-refundable).
  4. Refund = withheld $10,040 − tax after credits $5,640 = $4,400.

Tax before credits is $10,040. Two children under 17 bring $4,400 of Child Tax Credit — all of it usable against their tax. If they had put $4,400 in Step 3 of the W-4 instead, each paycheck would have been about $169 bigger (biweekly) and the spring refund would shrink to ≈ $0.

How the new OBBBA deductions can make a $120,000 refund bigger in 2027

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act added four deductions for 2025–2028 that you claim on the new Schedule 1-A whether or not you itemize. None of them is built into the default withholding tables, so if you qualify and didn’t update your W-4, the saving lands in your refund. At $120,000, your top dollars are taxed at 22%, so each $1,000 of new deduction is worth about $220 off your bill.

These deductions lower taxable income but not AGI, so they don’t change EITC or Child Tax Credit eligibility. Social Security and Medicare still apply to tips and overtime.

Why your refund could still come out different

At $120,000 you are past the EITC income limits for every family size, so family refunds here come almost entirely from the $2,200 Child Tax Credit.

State taxes on $120,000: a refund by state is a separate story

Everything above is federal. Your state return is filed separately, and whether it produces a refund depends on how much your employer withheld for the state. Here is the state income tax a single filer owes on $120,000 of wages in eight states (no local taxes):

Tax refund on $120,000: FAQ

How much federal tax is withheld from a $120,000 salary?

With a 2026 W-4 that only has the filing status checked, payroll withholds about $17,570 a year as a single filer ($676 per biweekly check), $13,988 as head of household and $10,040 as married filing jointly (one earner). Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) come on top and are never refunded.

Will I get a tax refund on $120,000 if I'm single with no kids?

Probably a small one or none. Our estimate is ≈ $0: the IRS withholding tables subtract the same $16,100 standard deduction your 1040 uses, so tax withheld and tax owed ($17,570) match. Refunds for single filers usually come from bonuses withheld at 22%, the new tips or overtime deductions, or credits.

How much is the refund for a family of four on $120,000?

For a married couple with two kids under 17 and one $120,000 W-2 job, we estimate about $4,400 if the W-4 did not list the children in Step 3. Most of that is the $2,200-per-child Child Tax Credit. If the kids were entered in Step 3, the refund drops to about ≈ $0 because the credit was already paid out in bigger paychecks.

How much does no tax on overtime save on a $120,000 salary?

If $120,000 includes 200 hours of time-and-a-half overtime, the deductible premium is about $5,042 and the tax saving is about $1,109. Because withholding doesn't know about the deduction unless you add it to W-4 Step 4(b), that saving shows up as a refund in 2027.

Is this the same as my state tax refund?

No. These figures are federal only. Your state return is separate; on $120,000 a single filer owes roughly $6,915 in California, $5,389 in Georgia and $0 in Texas. Whether you get a state refund depends on your state withholding.
