45 LPA in hand: the short answer

At 45 LPA every extra rupee of taxable salary is taxed at 30% plus cess, so salary structuring (NPS, reimbursements, variable pay timing) starts to matter. Income tax takes about ₹68,818 a month, and monthly in-hand is roughly ₹2,51,960 — 67% of CTC.

Per month that means a gross salary of about ₹3,43,486 on the payslip, minus ₹22,500 of your own PF, ₹208 average professional tax and ₹68,818 TDS. Professional tax is actually deducted as ₹200 a month and ₹300 in February in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Since the new labour codes took effect on 21 November 2025, “wages” (basic + DA) should be at least half of total pay, which is why many employers now set basic close to 50%. If your employer still uses a 40% basic, PF and gratuity are smaller and the monthly in-hand rises to about ₹2,60,796 (+₹8,836) — but your retirement savings fall by ₹9,000 a month.

CTC to in-hand: what gets deducted and why

Employer PF (₹2,70,000/yr) is part of your CTC but goes straight to the EPFO: 8.33% of basic (capped at ₹1,250 a month) into the pension scheme (EPS) and the rest into your EPF balance. Gratuity (₹1,08,173/yr) is a provision — you receive it only after five years of continuous service (one year for fixed-term employees under the labour codes). Many offer letters show both inside CTC, which is the main reason CTC ÷ 12 overstates take-home.

Employee PF (₹2,70,000/yr) is your 12% share, deducted every month. Income tax under the new regime is worked out on gross salary minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction: ₹41,21,827 − ₹75,000 = ₹40,46,827 taxable, taxed at slab rates of 5% to 30% plus 4% health and education cess — ₹8,25,810 for the year.

Karnataka: ₹200/month (₹300 in February) when monthly gross is ₹25,000 or more (amended from 1 April 2025). Maharashtra: ₹2,500 a year above ₹10,000/month; women earning up to ₹25,000/month are exempt (2023 amendment). Tamil Nadu: half-yearly slabs, ₹1,250 per half-year above ₹75,000 (Chennai Corporation rates; other local bodies may differ). Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh levy no professional tax on salaries.

Old-regime example (assumption): living in a rented flat in a metro at ₹45,000/month. From 1 April 2026 the 50% HRA limit applies in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad (Income-tax Rules 2026); 40% elsewhere.

The new regime leaves you about ₹7,995 more per month. For the old regime to break even you would need roughly ₹3,07,500 of extra deductions beyond those shown — typically only possible with a home loan (interest up to ₹2 lakh under the old regime) plus NPS 80CCD(1B) of ₹50,000.

If part of your 45 LPA CTC is variable pay

Suppose 10% of the package (₹4,50,000) is a performance bonus paid once a year. Basic, PF and HRA are then calculated on the fixed ₹40,50,000, so the monthly in-hand during the year is about ₹2,30,578, and the bonus month adds roughly ₹3,09,600 after its TDS (if paid at 100%). Over the full year that is ₹30,76,535 — +₹53,018 versus an all-fixed CTC, because PF is charged on a smaller basic.

The 50/30/20 split is only a starting point — in Mumbai or Bengaluru rent alone can swallow most of the “needs” share at this income. Remember that you are already saving ₹45,000 a month through EPF (both shares), so your real savings rate is higher than the 20% shown.

Tips to get more in hand from 45 LPA

FAQ: 45 LPA in hand salary

What is the in-hand salary for 45 LPA per month?

About ₹2,51,960 a month (₹30,23,517 a year) under the new tax regime in FY 2026-27, assuming basic pay is 50% of CTC, employer PF and gratuity are included in the CTC, PF is 12% of full basic and professional tax is ₹2,500 a year (Karnataka).

How much income tax is payable on 45 LPA in FY 2026-27?

About ₹8,25,810 a year (₹68,818 a month) under the new regime including 4% cess, on taxable income of ₹40,46,827.

Is the old or new tax regime better for 45 LPA?

The new regime. In our example with ₹1,50,000 of 80C, ₹25,000 of 80D and HRA exemption on ₹45,000/month rent, the old regime tax is ₹9,21,750 against ₹8,25,810 in the new regime. You would need about ₹3,07,500 of further deductions for the old regime to break even.

Why is 45 LPA not ₹3,75,000 per month in hand?

CTC includes money you never receive monthly: employer PF (₹2,70,000 a year) goes to your EPF account and the gratuity provision (₹1,08,173) is paid only when you leave after five years. Your own PF (₹2,70,000), professional tax and any TDS are then deducted from the gross salary of ₹41,21,827.

How much tax can employer NPS save at 45 LPA?

If your employer pays 14% of basic (₹3,15,000 a year) into NPS by restructuring the CTC, your new-regime tax falls by about ₹1,96,560 a year. Monthly in-hand drops slightly because that money is locked in NPS until retirement.
