18 LPA in hand: the short answer

18 LPA is a typical package for experienced engineers, product and finance professionals with 4–8 years of experience in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune or Gurugram. Here income tax becomes the second-largest deduction after PF: about ₹10,058 a month. Your top slab is 15%, and the monthly in-hand comes to roughly ₹1,18,127.

Per month that means a gross salary of about ₹1,37,394 on the payslip, minus ₹9,000 of your own PF, ₹208 average professional tax and ₹10,058 TDS. Professional tax is actually deducted as ₹200 a month and ₹300 in February in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Since the new labour codes took effect on 21 November 2025, “wages” (basic + DA) should be at least half of total pay, which is why many employers now set basic close to 50%. If your employer still uses a 40% basic, PF and gratuity are smaller and the monthly in-hand rises to about ₹1,22,038 (+₹3,911) — but your retirement savings fall by ₹3,600 a month.

CTC to in-hand: what gets deducted and why

Employer PF (₹1,08,000/yr) is part of your CTC but goes straight to the EPFO: 8.33% of basic (capped at ₹1,250 a month) into the pension scheme (EPS) and the rest into your EPF balance. Gratuity (₹43,269/yr) is a provision — you receive it only after five years of continuous service (one year for fixed-term employees under the labour codes). Many offer letters show both inside CTC, which is the main reason CTC ÷ 12 overstates take-home.

Employee PF (₹1,08,000/yr) is your 12% share, deducted every month. Income tax under the new regime is worked out on gross salary minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction: ₹16,48,731 − ₹75,000 = ₹15,73,731 taxable, taxed at slab rates of 5% to 30% plus 4% health and education cess — ₹1,20,702 for the year.

Karnataka: ₹200/month (₹300 in February) when monthly gross is ₹25,000 or more (amended from 1 April 2025). Maharashtra: ₹2,500 a year above ₹10,000/month; women earning up to ₹25,000/month are exempt (2023 amendment). Tamil Nadu: half-yearly slabs, ₹1,250 per half-year above ₹75,000 (Chennai Corporation rates; other local bodies may differ). Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh levy no professional tax on salaries.

Old-regime example (assumption): living in a rented flat in a metro at ₹25,000/month. From 1 April 2026 the 50% HRA limit applies in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad (Income-tax Rules 2026); 40% elsewhere.

The new regime leaves you about ₹5,184 more per month. For the old regime to break even you would need roughly ₹1,99,400 of extra deductions beyond those shown — typically only possible with a home loan (interest up to ₹2 lakh under the old regime) plus NPS 80CCD(1B) of ₹50,000.

If part of your 18 LPA CTC is variable pay

Suppose 10% of the package (₹1,80,000) is a performance bonus paid once a year. Basic, PF and HRA are then calculated on the fixed ₹16,20,000, so the monthly in-hand during the year is about ₹1,07,431, and the bonus month adds roughly ₹1,51,920 after its TDS (if paid at 100%). Over the full year that is ₹14,41,096 — +₹23,567 versus an all-fixed CTC, because PF is charged on a smaller basic.

Budgeting ₹1,18,100 a month

The 50/30/20 split is only a starting point — in Mumbai or Bengaluru rent alone can swallow most of the “needs” share at this income. Remember that you are already saving ₹18,000 a month through EPF (both shares), so your real savings rate is higher than the 20% shown.

Tips to get more in hand from 18 LPA

FAQ: 18 LPA in hand salary

What is the in-hand salary for 18 LPA per month?

About ₹1,18,127 a month (₹14,17,529 a year) under the new tax regime in FY 2026-27, assuming basic pay is 50% of CTC, employer PF and gratuity are included in the CTC, PF is 12% of full basic and professional tax is ₹2,500 a year (Karnataka).

How much income tax is payable on 18 LPA in FY 2026-27?

About ₹1,20,702 a year (₹10,058 a month) under the new regime including 4% cess, on taxable income of ₹15,73,731.

Is the old or new tax regime better for 18 LPA?

The new regime. In our example with ₹1,50,000 of 80C, ₹25,000 of 80D and HRA exemption on ₹25,000/month rent, the old regime tax is ₹1,82,904 against ₹1,20,702 in the new regime. You would need about ₹1,99,400 of further deductions for the old regime to break even.

Why is 18 LPA not ₹1,50,000 per month in hand?

CTC includes money you never receive monthly: employer PF (₹1,08,000 a year) goes to your EPF account and the gratuity provision (₹43,269) is paid only when you leave after five years. Your own PF (₹1,08,000), professional tax and any TDS are then deducted from the gross salary of ₹16,48,731.

How much tax can employer NPS save at 18 LPA?

If your employer pays 14% of basic (₹1,26,000 a year) into NPS by restructuring the CTC, your new-regime tax falls by about ₹39,312 a year. Monthly in-hand drops slightly because that money is locked in NPS until retirement.
