16-Type Compatibility: All 136 Pairings

A 16×16 compatibility chart, function-stack guides for every pair and 16 personality profiles.

Which personality types are compatible? This hub collects our in-depth guides to every combination of the 16 MBTI-style types: 136 unique pairings (120 mixed pairs plus 16 same-type pairs), each scored with the same model as the live compatibility calculator and explained through the two cognitive function stacks.

Scores start at 30 points and add up on four letters: sharing S or N +25, T/F +14 if the same or +10 if different, different E/I +14 (same +6) and different J/P +12 (same +6). The range is 52 to 95. Each guide then goes further than the number: where the pair clicks, friction points, communication tips, love, friendship and work, a realistic conflict example and a checklist.

Keep it in perspective. Personality-type labels come from self-report questionnaires and are not a validated predictor of relationship success. Reviews of the type approach note weak test-retest stability and limited predictive validity (Pittenger, 2005, Consulting Psychology Journal 57(3), 210–221), and a meta-analysis of 19 samples found that relationship satisfaction tracks continuous traits such as lower neuroticism and higher agreeableness and conscientiousness rather than type matches (Malouff et al., 2010, Journal of Research in Personality 44(1), 124–127).

Highest-scoring pairs and why

8 pairings reach the model's maximum of 95: same S/N preference, same T/F, opposite E/I and opposite J/P. Examples: ISTJ + ESTP, ISFJ + ESFP, INFJ + ENFP, INTJ + ENTP, ISTP + ESTJ, ISFP + ESFJ, INFP + ENFJ, INTP + ENTJ. Same-type pairs score lower (81) because the model rewards complementary energy and rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Which MBTI types are most compatible?
On our model, pairs that share S/N and T/F but differ on E/I and J/P score highest (95), for example INFJ + ENFP and ISTJ + ESTP.
How many personality type combinations are there?
16 × 16 = 256 ordered combinations, or 136 unique pairings when order does not matter (120 mixed pairs plus 16 same-type pairs).
Are same-type couples compatible?
They score 81 on our model: easy understanding, but a shared blind spot because both have the same inferior function.
Is MBTI compatibility scientifically proven?
No. Type results are self-reported and not a validated predictor of relationship success; traits like agreeableness and emotional stability matter more in research (Malouff et al., 2010).
