Many instructors accept ±10% of a word target. X/Twitter counts links as 23 characters and CJK characters and emoji as 2, which this meter follows approximately.
Keywords appear here once you start typing.
Words are runs of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, so contractions (don't) and hyphenated words (well-known) count once, like Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Characters counts every visible character including spaces; emoji and accented letters count as one. Characters without spaces removes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Sentences end with a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space, or with a line break; decimals such as 3.5 are not split. Paragraphs are non-empty lines. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 140 words per minute. Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears divided by the total word count — keep main keywords natural, usually around 1–3%.
Your text never leaves your device. It's saved only in this browser so a refresh doesn't lose your draft. Writing in Korean? Use the Korean character counter (글자수 세기) with byte counts and manuscript pages.
