How the travel budget is calculated

Pick a destination and travel style and the calculator fills in typical costs, converted into your currency. Every number is editable — replace the presets with real quotes from your booking site as soon as you have them.

Hotel = room rate × rooms × nights, plus taxes and per-room fees. Food = per-person daily amount × days × travelers × (1 + tip %). Transport and activities = per-person daily amount × days × travelers. Card fees and the exchange-rate buffer are applied to on-trip spending; the contingency is applied to everything.

Japan's lodging tax is worked out from the room rate per person per night using each city's bands (Tokyo: ¥0 under ¥10,000, ¥100 under ¥15,000, ¥200 above; Kyoto from 1 March 2026: ¥200–¥10,000; Osaka ¥0–¥500, the top band estimated; Fukuoka ¥200 estimated).

Rates and presets. Exchange rates are a single snapshot from 2026-10-30: Hana Bank base rates in Korean won (USD 1,334.30, JPY 100 = 846.96, EUR 1,493.08), with GBP, CAD, AUD and INR derived through the ECB euro reference rates of the same day, and THB, VND, TWD and SGD approximated from the dollar rate. Cross rates (for example USD→JPY) are computed from these. Hotel, food and transport presets are estimates based on typical prices, not quotes.

    Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need per day for Tokyo?
With the mid-range preset, food, local transport and sightseeing come to roughly US$70–80 per person per day before hotels and flights. Budget travelers can get by on about US$40.
Which exchange rates does the travel budget calculator use?
A snapshot from 30 October 2026: Hana Bank base rates for USD, JPY and EUR in Korean won, with GBP, CAD, AUD and INR derived from ECB reference rates the same day. You can overwrite the exchange rate field with today's rate.
Why add a contingency to a travel budget?
Flights get delayed, prices change and exchange rates move. A 10% contingency on top of your estimate covers most surprises without having to cut the trip short.
